Hello, I was just wondering if oliver is ok, he has green poo!
Is this normal for a breast feed baby?

Jadie

Hiya

The odd green poo is ok - Ky had a few green poos before he was weaned. I think its safe to say that you can expect green stools every now and then without too much concern.
If your Olivers stools are nearly always green and if he is not gaining weight well even though your milk supply seems fine, then it could be that he is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. As the foremilk is more dilute, with more lactose and less calories, it stimulates your baby's digestive tract to move the milk along too fast producing green pooh.
Consistently green stools could also be a warning that your baby is sensitive to something, for example any medication he may be taking. If not, could he be sensitive to medications you are taking, like iron supplements? Very occasionally, a baby can become sensitive to something in your diet which is passed to him through your breastmilk. In this case other symptoms, such as eczema or a rash, may be present.

Hope this helps

Hiya, Thanks for your help. He was only feeding for 5 mins at a time last night before sleeping again so maybe he was only getting the first milk!
I will try harder to wake him up for more tonight and see what happens then! I have only seen green poo a few times and its not really green!

I never thought I d be talking so much about poo!!! ha ha

thanks again

Jadie

I know what you mean - I've never inspected pooh so closely!
Sometimes Ky had normal coloured pooh with green running through it - I wouldn't worry too much about waking him though, it happens to most babies from time to time and they are not always going to feed as long as we would like.

Rubie had a green poo today, it was really runny with seeds in it  and it stank!! But she seemed healthy she was in good spirits so I'm not worried :D

Hi Jadie

When Olivia was really sleepy and wouldn't feed for very long the BF councellor advised me to keep putting her back on the same boob she had been feeding from at the next feed to enable her to get more hindmilk.

Olivia has green poohs from time to time as well.

Yep like you have all said green poo can be an indication of a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance. I agree with Lucy, put baby back on the last boob to ensure they get hindmilk too. It might also be worth talking to your HV about getting your latch checked to see if this is ok.

What about green poo for formula babies Beanie? Do you know?

It could pssibly be wind or a slight tummy infection but if she is happy enough I wouldn't worry hun. Just keep an eye on it. (Ifeel like the Gillian McKeith of the baby world) :D

lol beanie I alwys trust your advice!! :D

nb - she always does it at my grandma's oap home, maybe she's trying to tell me something

kacy is bottle feed and she had a couple of green poos i got told my the midwife it was normal it just where they are getting rid of their mucus when they are first born it will come up either end.

Max had a few green poos before he was eating solids, now he has all kinds of colours and shapes!! Chocolate pudding came out the same as it went in  sorry if tmi!!!!

should I be worried, as my LO poos have been green for at least a week now????!!!! shes been fine in herself so I didnt think anything of it.

If they have been green for that long, it might be worth ringing HV to check, but if LO is happy and then i wouldnt worry to much
