I've been reading a lot about the benefits of organic food and skincare products for fertility. Just wondered if any of you lovely ladies had any thought on this? On one hand I want to try anything that could improve our chances so we can honestly say we've done everything we can but on the other hand I don't know if it's just a waste of money. OH is pretty skeptical and if I'm honest I'm not really sure what side of the fence I'm on. Would be great to hear any opinions.

I think it's great if you can afford to go organic. I am careful with shampoo and skin care stuff...I make sure the nasty chemicals aren't in it...oh and toothpaste. I avoid processed food and preservatives, MSG, caffeine, aspartame, etc and don't use plastic bottles because of the estrogen. I eat tons of vegetables and nutritious food...even started to eat kidneys as organ food is good for fertility. Going organic sounds like a great idea...anything that will help your body will help your fertility.

I started to do that when ttc my daughter but then I figured people get drunk loads, eat all sorts and still get pregnant so I stopped. I was careful about plastic water bottles though I remember. I usually just drink out a bottle this time..woops lol xx

Thanks both.

I think I'm going to look at switching the skincare stuff. Although it's going to cost more, neither of us are heavy product users. I'm hoping it's an expense we can justify and as we're both sensitive skin sorts, I'm hoping there will be visible benefits for us.

As far as food alcohol and caffeine are already gone. Neither off us were big on either so it was surprisingly easy for us compared to most people. I've been cooking a lot more from scratch and including lots of veggies etc. We've both enjoying meals more so definitely been an improvement. Been switching to wholewheat versions of things also. I think we may hold off on organic food to begin with mostly due to cost.

Interesting point about plastic bottles. I've got a water filter jug and trying very hard to drink more but taking it to work with me is tricky. Think I need to get some sort of decent flask but a lot of them are plastic as well.

I'm not sure of the scientific facts' on the benefits for fertility as per google lots of opinions either way. I tend to stick with NHs advise and they don't mention it other than having a healthy bum, I'm slightly over weigh (about 1 stone) so trying to lose that by eating healthier and less processed foods.

I know what you mean though on wanting to do everything you can, I've been having the same debate about caffeine, I've cut down to one filter coffee a day but think going to cut it out all together from next cycle, even if doesn't help conceive hopefully when get BFP will have to cut it out so best to start now.

How long have you been ttc moomingirl, is it your 1st??

Yeah TTC #1. Been tracking cycles etc or about a year but unofficially trying for the year before that. I was diagnosed with high prolactin and finally got that sorted about a year ago so I probably wasn't ovulating before that. Now that we know I am and we still weren't getting anywhere, GP was happy to do basic tests. Turns out OH has low motility and they found an endometrial polyp on my ultrasound. So I'm really trying to improve our lifestyle etc to try and help with sperm quality and hormonal balance as clearly the odds aren't in our favour!! Have gynae follow up in a few weeks so hopefully I'll get a straight answer about how much of a problem the polyp actually is then we have fertility clinic a few weeks after that.

How long have you been trying Summertime?

I honestly don't think organic makes a difference with fertility, as long as your healthy and have things in moderation then I think that is good enough. I think its a bit of a money making gimmick myself (I could be wrong). Of course, it is better to cut down on caffeine, alcohol and to avoid processed foods but can do that without the price tag of organic.
I did avoid plastic bottles but not for fertility reasons, my OH told me he had seen something about a link to cancer.
I am with Millie on this, there are heroin addicts that manage to conceive, people who drink heavily and loads who get pregnant without even trying and I am sure most are not on organic diet.

Is your OH on any vitamins for the motility? My OH had low motility on the first SA, he started taking wellman conception vits, the result was then just about ok a month or so later and then when we had IVF and he had been on them for some time, his sample was exceptional, motility way above the norm and count increased massively too. Couldn't believe that he went from low to amazing results xx

Thanks lisey. It's really good to hear your OH saw such an improvement with the vitamins. Me and OH are both taking the Pregnacare his & hers. Also omega 3 as we're not big on fish though making a conscious effort to include it more. Made a fish curry the other night rather than the usual chicken and we both enjoyed it just as much so might be a good way to do it.

OH is very much of the opinion that it's a money spinner and as a few of you have mentioned plenty people get pregnant without trying so it can't be essential. I think I'll stick with general improvements to diet which we're both happy with.

We only stated in January so it's still early days but trying to do anything we can to give ourselves the best chance. When I fell pregnant I wasn't so any of the recommended things so I don't know how much difference it makes.

I am not sure my dh would agree to taking vitamins but he's more healthy than me and not overweight.

I am trying not to tell too many people about our ttc as it gets awkward with people asking and don't want the pressure so this where the forums are great.

Really hope you get your BFP soon moomin xx

I know a lot of men are a bit funny about vitamins. Mine has decided that if taking a pill or two is enough to keep me quiet then it's a small price to pay lol!!

We're also keeping quiet about our plans as I'm finding it hard enough without people feeling they are entitled to offer 'advice' and opinions. Only my sister and one work friend know and currently that's more than enough for me. One of the reasons I joined this forum tbh.

Good luck with your journey.

I'm trying to do as much as possible to increase my fertility (and health overall) so I'm much more conscious about what I put in my body, both in terms of food and cosmetics. It's a good chance to transition into a healthier life and hopefully get pregnant sooner!

Not eating a fully organic diet but going in that direction, it's an incredible journey.
