Wasnt quite sure where to post this.

So i found out i had gestational diabetes at 28 weeks with my first. My BMI was high (30.4)so thats why they tested me and lucky me had it! I had growth scans thoughout the rest of my pregnancy and at my last growth scan (36 weeks) by son was estimated 6lb 9oz so they let me go full term. Ending up being induced at 40weeks and giving birth naturally (with forceps) to a 10lb 4oz baby!

Now pregnant with baby no. 2 i am being tested for diabetes early (16 weeks). My bmi is lower this time (28). Im just wanting to know if anyone else has had diabetes in just one pregnancy? And also do you think i would induced early or be elected for cesarean due to size of my first.

I know you arent doctors or midwives but was just wondering if anyone else has been through something similar. I have asked my midwife but shes refured me to a consultant and i wont get any answers from them for a while.

Sorry for the long post!

Hi Laura,

I have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes I didn’t have it first time around and I’m absolutely terrified that baby is going to be enormous! All the oh they are probably going to induce you etc has already started and I feel very disappointed in myself for even having GD in the first place as I had got a very specific birth plan that I know I’m not going to be able to have. If you have any tips you would like to share I would be very great full 😊 xxx

I was diagnosed with GD at 19 weeks in my first pregnancy. My BMI was in the normal range and they said it just happens sometimes. It's due to the placenta not being able to sort the sugar so don't blame yourselves. I manage to control it just through diet alone so was allowed to go full term... Daughter arrived by herself at 37 weeks weighing 6lb 3.

When pregnant with number two, I was tested at 20 weeks which was negative and again at 28 weeks which was .1 over their parameters! Again I managed to stay diet controlled and delivered naturally at 39 weeks... He weighed 7lb 7.

Both times I was told to expect a huge baby!

Dont be terrified, you will be fine! Dont give yourself a hard time about having GD its just one of them things.
I was meant to be induced at 37 weeks, then 38 weeks and then 39 weeks. But my stupid consultant let me go full term saying that baby isnt going to be "that big". I bet shes never had to push out a 10lb+ baby! Ive got the same consultant again and this time im going to demand this baby out. Ive got 3 weeks until my GDT.
I havent really got any advice for you im afriad. Just try and eat sensibly although the odd treat now and then wont hurt.
When it comes to being induced try and keep as active as possible in the hope you will go into labour naturally. Being induced was very uncomfortable and i was there for 3 days before i actually had my son. Its a long winded process. X
