I went to see the community midwife today at the hospital who informed me I have a vaginal infection. At 19 weeks I had bleeding so I was sent to the hospital where I was given an internal (my first ever!!) and they took a swab. The doctor told me I had some discharge but it was nothing to worry about so I never gave it another thought. Anyway the swab results came back yesterday according to the midwife and it showed a mild infection so she gave me anti-biotics!
I am furious as I have had that infection for at LEAST 8 weeks! The swab should have been tested much sooner! The midwife was just as mad about it as she said if there was a sign of discharge the swab should have been tested ASAP. 8 weeks is ridiculous!!

This is exactly what I went through :(

Swabs done 14th Feb....Found out by chance last monday when I asked for other some other results (that they have lost)...I went in with bleeding too.

Urine was the same. had infection for potentially 12 weeks.

These hospitals are letting us down!! I can't understand what is happening to maternity services. I can only assume they are overstretched...Or patient care now comes second to having to meet government targets :x

OMG that is sooo shocking! Both of you had infections and hadnt been told :( I really dont know whats going on with our Health Service!!

The funniest for me was when the doctor said 'Untreated BV can bring on premature labour'

 :x

I wanted to shout at her 'It wouldn't be untreated if you had told me!'

Then she said 'Do you want the prescription today or do you want to go to your gp and get it?'

 What a thicko cow!!I was gonna wit for an appointment to treat my months old infection.

Because I was already of cefalexin antibiotics asof the day before, they gave me dalecin cream to insert in my fangita for 5 nights. :D

Having two formsof antibiotics atonce meant I ended up with a bowel infection and the start of thrush!!!!!! (vagisil today has scrathed that particular itch lol)

I amfed upof it. Sent an email of complain to my hospitals PALS service.

It really is ridiculous!! 8 weeks ago it was a mild infection, something tells me it isn't so mild anymore! :x

WTF?! Some doctors are idiots!! :wall:

Did the Dr tell you what the infection was?

The reason I ask is I had a swab taken at 10 weeks for thrush and it came back that I had a GBS infection also.

GBS can be dangerous during pregnancy and my Dr was so not in the least bit informed about it, nor did they seem to know much about GBS and how it can affect newborn babies.

Now I dont want to scare you but I would try and find out what the infection is, if its GBS then you need to discuss this with your midwife.

okay, this is bang out of order. i cant believe you ladies werent told sooner. i understand they may be overstretched and budgets are tight but jesus, its putting YOU and your BABIES at HIGH risk!!!!

infections can cause premature labour, that is a fact, it costs the NHS £750,000+ to look after a 25 weeker. not to mention the fact that 50% of them dont even survive and those that do often have long term problems that cost the NHS even more. so if they wanna look at it in figures im sure it would be far cheaper and a lot less risky to have procedures in place in the beginning!!!!

i cant believe they would put pregnant mothers at risk like that. :x

It's all imcompetence!!

I was group Strep B positive before I was pregnant. Gave in urine sample to be tested at my anomally scan. Thats the result they have lost!!

I need to know the results as I will need antibiotics when I am in labour, as could be fatal for bubs.....But hey....its so unimportant to them that they simply lose my results!!

Reading all this worries me, i must make sure i ask about my results at my next appointment. At my booking in the midwife took blood and never told me what it was for, i only got the results put in my notes at 24 week appointment and nothing was mentioned about them.
I've looked and my urine sample says it seemed contaminated so should be sent again, to my knowledge they havnt. I've mentioned having thrush to them a few times and even went to the doctor to get treatment (not gonna pay when its free prescriptions atm lol) and he never even suggested taking swabs and made me feel so uncomfortable that even though it had crossed my mind i didnt want to ask.

I do feel like they dont bother checking out these things, or looking in to results! They shouldnt get away with putting our babies lives in danger!

Hi,

From what I've heard, the NHS are particularly bad at testing for these infections. My friend had the GBS one but she only found out by chance because she had a bit of a scare and had to go into hospital. I think they should test routinely for this especially as it can be really dangerous. To be honest, before my friend told me about it, I didn't have a clue about it.

And you really have to push the point to get a swab done. I had one a little while ago when I had thrush but I'd been to the doc several times before as it kept coming back but I was never offered one! I virtually had to ask!!!

Hope you're both feeling better - such long waits for tests like this is completely unacceptable!

It is just a baterial infection. Makes me feel a tad dirty to be honest but I do wash down there in the morning and before bed. I am still angry about being left for 8 weeks with this infection! :x

my god

that is bad.....must admit in 2001 it was written on my notes that i had Bacterial vaginosis, i was never told or even treated, 4 years later my doc looks at my notes and says the pelvic pain i had been having could be the result of untreated infection and i need a laporoscopy, camera inside to check my tubes ! my goodness...the NHS can be so pants esp when you are pregnant for them to leave it for 8 weeks, glad you have the treatment now and everything is ok. I was ok, I fell pregnant not long after and the pelvic pain turned out to be linked to my back.
good luckx

You will find this funny...But BV can be caused by the cleaning. It's cleaning inside, which can kll of the good bacteria. And scrubbing your bits with more than warm water.

The cream they gave me treats your partner too. When you have sex. I don't think my partner got that week!! I was too uncomfortable!!lol

This is bang out of order i am getting more and more furious reading this
you poor girls not being told earlier is so bloody wrong  :x
