Hi,
Just wondering what other peoples experiences are with doctors and midwives whilst pregnant?
I suffer from really bad anxiety and all it would take to put me at ease is let me come to the surgery and listen to my babys heartbeat but they don't seem interested when i call.

My experiences have been pretty good - although I've had a private scan for reassurance.

How far along are you slops? I don't know if it differs from area to area, but where I'm based, the won't listen for the babies heartbeat until at least 24 weeks as they judge it to be too risky and difficult to pick up. I know other areas will give it a go from 16 weeks.

you might want to buy a doppler so you can listen to it yourself from about 12 weeks altho if you cant find it at first it might make you more anxious! a reassurance scan is a good idea in early pregnancy but of course its only good on the day you have the scan after that you can be worrying again!! pregnancy is a really worrying time.

sorry that you're feeling so worried. how far along are you?

usually it's only midwives that would listen to a heartbeat as they are trained to find it and if a GP struggled it may make you more anxious

you could get a Doppler but again it may make you worry more if you can't find it

I don't mean this to sound harsh but GPs are so stretched these days they really don't have time to be reasurring people

Midwives are pretty good usually in that if you experience reduced movements theyll have you in and listen for heartbeat to be sure all is ok. But if its just to put anxiety at ease theyre unlikely to have you in to listen for babys heartbeat.

I understand how youre feeling as Im dealing with prenatal anxiety too. If Im being completely honest what you need to do is see GP to get a referral for CBT or counselling to deal with your anxiety.

I imagine the number of anxious Mums to be far out weighs the resource Docs/Midwives have.

I am also anxious, nervous, a natural worrier too, so can see where you are coming from. But for a health service that is already stretched to capacity, I don't think it would be possible for them to reassure every worried mother.
