Hi,

This is our first post!!

Can anyone tell us if it's completely safe to continue taking Folic Acid in the second & third trimesters?

We're now into the second trimester of our first child - due end of November :cheer:

Thanks for all your help.

Folic Acid does the most good in the first 9 weeks of pregnancy, It is recommended that you take it until at least 12 weeks, although like stated all the good work is done in the first 9 weeks.... it can reduce the risks of spinabiffida by as much as 75%.... thats why many woman take folic acid whilst trying to conceive as well, so their babies get the full benefits.

I don't believe there is any harm in continuing the folic acid but i also don't know if there is any benefits either...

You know eating healthy, lots of greens etc, is a very good option too.
one bowl of cornflakes of rice crispies contains your recommended daily amount of folic acid also... wee bit of info there... so if you have that too... Well it's all good.

Hope this helps some... OH ! Congratulations ! on your baby news!!

Also WELCOME to the forum   :cheer: Lv Yvonne xxx

Thanks so much!

What a prompt reply! - at this time of night as well

We're so excited. We were told for years we'd never be able to conceive without 'help' And then - eleven years later, with no help...... 8)

Congrats and good luck!

Folic acid is another form of iron, which you will need, mutli-vit's like preg-a-day or Lactalins are good to take but do not contain enough of everything as a pregnancy progresses.

I always thought that folic acid should be stopped around the 12th week but I presumed wrongly. My Gyn has told me to keep taking it, if I am wanting to breast feed then when I hit my 7th month, to re-concult her and she'll advise accordingly.

It is essential that you ask your gyn to prescribe you iorn and culcuim tablets, esp whent he babies bones start to grow, it will help out with your teeth also. You may find that as time goes on, your teeth will be prone to infections, sensitivity, bleeding gums a lot more, this is why you need your calcuim.

Zink is good to take also, keeps your brain from forgetting things

Vitaman C,B and E's are essential too. I was taking Lactalins but in the last 3 weeks and felt a better difference in taking all different vitamins rather than one tablet combined.

congrats! i take pregnacare, which has other supplements in it as well as folic acid. and that's fine throughout the pregnancy and breastfeeding too

If taking folic acid past 12 weeks worries you, then eat bananas, they are full of folic acid!

Have one in the morning and one in the afternoon, not only do they have folic acid in them, they are great for your energy levels!

I've taken Folic Acid (in my Sanatogen Pronatal vitamins) for a year prior to TTC, while TTC and right through my pregnancy. Some advice you stop at 12 weeks, others tell you to continue. Do make your own mind up though...it's my opinion that since were all told we need it in our veggies, fruits and so forth during "normal" life that it does something during pregnancy even after the 12 week marker, your not immune to miscarriage till you pass the 24 week marker I'm afraid and that alone was enough to make me continue it. Personal decision, a lot of ladies stop at 12 weeks. I'll continue it untill I've finished breastfeeding.

I took folic acid while TTC and for the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. I try to eat a healthy diet every day and drink plently water. I was told by my GP and MW that I didn't need to carry on taking it past 12 weeks. xx
