Hi. it's my first time on here !
At my 20 wk anomoly scan, i was told there was fluid around my baby boys kidney....was scanned again this week at 32 weeks, and the fluid is still there. The sonographer told me a bit about what to expect (antibiotics/scan etc after he is born) - but didn't really tell me much more. Anyone heard of this or had any experience of it ? am a bit worried:oooo:

not heard of it hun but didnt want to read and run!! :D im sure hell be fine.... easy said but try not to worry... if it was something to worry about surely they would be taking him out early??? :D xxx

Welcome to the forum  I don't have any experience of this but I did find this explanation by a sonographer to someone in a similar position

What your doctor would like to rule out is an obstruction of the babies urinary tract (kidneys). First off, because your doctor waited almost 10 weeks in between ultrasounds, it makes me think that the first findings of fluid in the kidneys, was borderline and did not concern anyone too much.

It is not uncommon to see a 'fullness' of what is called the renal pelvis, in a fetus (59% of fetal kidneys examined will show this). The renal pelvis is the point where the urine empties into the ureter(the tube that goes down to the bladder). A measurement of 5 mm or less is considered normal. 6-9 mm is probably normal and anything over 10 mm would be called significant and should be monitored closely and the baby should be scanned after birth. It is best to perform the postnatal ultrasound a few days after birth and not immediately to get accurate results.

My guess is that your baby falls into the 59% of kidney ultrasounds and that everything is normal.

I hope everything's ok, and the fact that they're not recommending any further scans before you give birth suggests that you don't need to worry (I know it's almost impossible not to though) x

ah, thanks for that......feel better now ! I've got to go and see doctor at hospital on Monday to discuss the results - hope I don't get the teenage student doc I had last time - if i do, am gonna put my foot down and ask for consultant. The teenie doc had no bedside manner at all and seemed absolutely clueless.

Hiya hun,

My daughter had this when she was born, it wasn't picked up on any of my routine scans - it was spotted in a scan I had when I was 5 days overdue as I went into hospital due to not feeling the baby move as much and was worried.

She was put onto Trimethoprim (antibiotic) from birth, just a low dose as a preventative measure to stop her developing a kidney infection and causing any lasting damage. You'll be pleased to know at almost 2 and a half she has grown out of it now, turns out it is quite common. I think she got the all clear not long before she turned 2, baby will have to have scans maybe every 6 months, it just depends on the severity and the cause. Grace has had lots of tests to determine the cause etc, but has never actually had any infections or problems due to this. It has never made her poorly, so try not to worry yourself about it.

Grace used to take one dose of antibiotics at day at night time before bed.

I hope this helps, if you want to know anything else just ask :)

Thanks Laura - love this forum lark, am feeling better by the minute. Was really upset after the scan, a lot to do with the fact that my 6 yr old daughter was born with a physical disability in her arms and so I'm hyper-worried all the time with this one that there will also be a problem. Added to this, I'm getting on a bit (39) - and refused the downs tests and someone mentioned at work about fluid on kidenys being a soft marker for downs....(nice thing to say to someone!) ha ha ...well your story about Grace has made me a lot more positive. If all goes well, I will defo be asking you for more advice once he's born - if he has the same thing as Grace.

I think Grace had what is called a 'dilated renal pelvis' on her right side, basically fluid was building up in her right kidney. They did tell me that the likelihood was she would grown out of it by the time she was about 2 and they were right. I think they are just so tiny, that it sometimes takes a little bit of time for some bits to fully develop and catch up - once she was up and about walking I thinking that helped things.

I hope all goes well for you, and like I say if you ever need a chat just shout!

That's great new Laura... thanks for that. I'm glad Grace is ok :)

My daughter is on the same antibiotic, she has kidney reflux :)

Im glad you have had some reassurance from the forum, I dont have anything to add but hope all goes well for you :)

Thank you all for your replies- can't believe that within an hour, 2 members have said their daughters have the same thing. can't tell you how reassured I am. Will let you know how it goes x
