About 7 weeks ago, we looked after my friends cat and dog. No fleas at the time, but now they seem to be everywhere!! Can only think eggs were laid in the carpet and the heat has brought them out.

Well OH put down some carpet flea killer powder, and spent two hours hoovering on Sunday, FOUR hours hoovering on Monday, including the mattress and sofas, and is taking our duvet to the laundrette. The next morning, I spotted another one! So he put down another lot of powder, and is going to hoovering again later tonight.

Anyone got any old housewife tricks for getting rid of them?! We want them gone ASAP so none get near LO when he's here!

Get to the vets and buy the flea housespary (forget the name but they will know). When I was younger my cats had fleas...............I remember my brother coming round in white joggers. Within minutes he was covered in fleas.
I was mortified  Ooohhh its makes me itch just thinking about it!

I spent a fortune on shop products and useless powders, nothing worked until I got frontline for my cats and this special spray for my house. You will have to wash all bedding/mats etc. Fleas breed at an incrediable rate esp in this heat.

Also make sure you do every corner of your house as the eggs can lay hibernated for ages. I would tell your friend to get some frontline too if her pets have fleas.
good luck :D

Hiya,

You can get flea bomb foggers. They are the best thing if usual methods don't work. I had a 'problem' last summer as there was a bit of an epidemic in the village. I washed everything on a boil wash, sprayed all the furniture & then set off one of these flea bombs - you will need to leave the house for a few hours though - it sorted the problem totally. I had spent about 2 weeks before that spraying, washing & hoovering and this deffo did the trick.

I hate fleas.

We had this when our cats were kittens. Went on holiday and my mum had them at her house for a week. When we got back the flat had fleas which were biting us as they were hungry as cats hadn't been there.

We had to put flea powder down EVERYWHERE and stay somewhere else for the night (not what we needed after a delayed flight  ), the next morning hoovered. Put a load more flea powder down and went out all day again and then hoovered it all up that night and it seemed to do the trick. Also we bought the cats home so if there any fleas left they would bite them instead of us and got them treated with flea stuff from the vet.

I'm a little obsessed about having fleas now.

We had tham everywhere once too. We spent a fortune on all the sprays but nothing worked until we got someone from the yellow pages to come do the job properly! It only cost about £20 too! After spending about £50 on sprays! :wall:

It's making me scratch just remembering it, it was 7 years ago and still makes me cringe. Might be easier to get someone out to do it properly as I'm just remembering spending a fortune on flea powders.

That's the problem with kittens, can't use the harsh flea stuff from the vet until they are 6 months.

At least they will all die off soon cos they have nothing to live on.

Apart from Hideilu and her OH. :(

Fleas can feed on humans. They don't live on us but they will feed from us! :puke:

We had next door's cat coming in the house for a while and it brought it's little friends in... we spent a fortune on various sprays/powders/bombs etc, but it was the spray from the vets that got rid in the end. Combined with the Advantage spot on drops for our cat and firmly telling him he wasn't to bring friends round in future (well, locking the cat flap at night & being quick with the water spray bottle during the day!).

Nearly forgot - the spray is about £15 so not cheap but you can easily spend double that on cheap crap that doesn't work. You're best to just splash out in the first instance & save time & money in the long run.

OH has heard that they only need one feed and that will see them through for 2months- a year!! :puke: Already been bitten 3 times today!!

Thanks for all the tips ladies. Even if it is £15 for spray or £20 for someone to come round, I would rather do that and get them shot of! OH has already spent about £10 on powders! Plus the cost of taking the duvets to laundrette!

OOooh it makes me itch just thinking of them!!

I had this problem and went to the vets for house spray. Do it then go out for an hour as it's so strong. It cost me about £15 for a really tall can. Did the trick! They were gone by the end of the day!

You defo need to get to the vets for a proper House Spray *can't remember it's name!*, none of that Bob Martin powder crap! It will do the trick for you!

I've just checked my receipt from the vets & it was Indorex spray. Massive can, supposed to cover a 3 bed house. It did our 2 bed bungalow fine.
