Be honest girls. :D

At what age did you start giving your lo solids?

Adam is doing quite well now that I have increased his feeds to 6oz, but some people have suggested to me that I should put a little bit of rusk into his bottle.

I really don't want to do this just yet, and would prefer to wait until he is older than 16 weeks.

What are the first signs that Adam will be ready for his first few spoonfuls of baby rice.

We started weaning when Daniel was 17 weeks (I think) with a bit of a baby rice, but now he is on a full pot of veggie puree.

The signs were-staring at us eating, waking in the night, being unsettled in the evening, and me wanting to try it out  He loved them straight away and eats eevrything (fingers crossed)

But I would think you should wait with Adam a bit more  And about rusks-they contain sugar, so I think it is better to avoid them in the beginning

I weaned Tia early at around 3 months. just a teaspoon of baby rice with breast milk once a day. she was such a hungry lil thing that it just became necessary. she never settled after a feed, screamed and cried constantly and after a week I was frazzled. I only tried it because the HV said that years ago they used to put baby rice in the bottle for hungry babies... I remember Tia loving it...guzzling it down...then passed out for 3 hours... I thought that I'd killed her  she'd never been so quiet.

But Adam is much too young atm and certainly not for rusks, if anything it should be baby rice as its simple/plain with no added sugar.

Thanks. xx

I'm not going to give Adam anything other than his milk until I think he is ready.

I was told again today of someone giving their daughter egg custard at 9 weeks old. She admitted that she never told the HV about it, but then most mums I have spoken to seem to tell little white lies to their HV.

I know I have sid in the past that mum's know their own babies best and should use their own judgement, but honestly, some people......... :(

Hey,

I'm a fan of later weaning following current WHO guidelines and it worked for us. DD had her first taste of anything other than breastmilk at 25+ weeks, but she isn't a particularly hungry baby.

I'm sure I must have lied to my HV about other things though!

Valentine Xxx

I don't think you should do it yet if your not comfortable with it. Like Valentine I didn't give Lola anything other than breastmilk untill the other week. I would have waited untill 6 months but she was trying to grab our food

Charlotte was just under 6 months before she swallowed anything but I gave her food to play with at about 5.5 months. Most of my friends seem to go a little earlier - about 5 months I would say was average. I definately wouldn't give anything before 17 weeks though.

Both of my children were 5 and a half months when I started them with food. Alex so far has only had very little in the way of solids.

Nie, Adam is way too young hun.

melissa first tried baby rice and apple&banana at 17 weeks- but it was only like 2 baby-spoonfuls at a time, and only about 3 times a week. then at 5 months it was 2 small jars of fruit per day. weaned her properly at 6 months she was on proper 3 meals a day, cereal breakfast, 2 savoury meals each with puddings

I always thought that he was too young and had no intention to give him anything other than his milk as he is doing well now that he is taking 6oz.

I am pleased to know that I am not the only one out there that thinks waiting is a good idea.

at the end of the day the babies will let you know when they are ready for food... either by the way they are acting or the fact that milk doesn't satisfy them anymore... and even if they do seem ready, yet they don't take to solids theres no harm done... you just put them back on the milk again... :)
