First scan at 16wks?

Hi everyone. I've been told I won't get my first scan until 16 weeks but everyone on here seems to be getting one at 12 weeks. Does anyone know why I have to wait so long? I live in Hampshire if that makes any difference. Have my first appointment with the MW on the 2nd May, but that's only for paperwork stuff I think. I really hope someone can help me on this as I'm dying to see my little one on that screen

Hiya hun when i found out i was pregnant with colby they asked how far on i thought i was and i only thought i was about 6 weeks so they waited 6 weeks before i got a scan and in the scan it showd up i was 15 1/2 weeks pregnant and that i wouldnt get another one as up here in scotland u only get one unless there is something wrong. I moaned and moaned about this as i wanted to makesure everything was growing as it should so at 32 weeks i demanded to see the consultant and told him that i wanted a growth scan and i got one and it was so amazing because she was so big and i had just been to teh loo before going in and the picture was just so amazing you could even see her eyes as they were open..lol sorry for rabbling on but i think it is terrible u only get one or 2 scans!!

I too live in hampshire, in the area I'm in the midwife automatically referre us to winchester hospital which also doesn't do scans until 16-18 weeks (you could pay for a 12week 1 if you wanted), but I'd decided that I wanted to go to Salisbury hospital (had heard better things) so I got my midwife to referre me there instead and surprisingly they do do a scan at 12 weeks, it all depends on the hospital really

It may be worth looking at different hospitals in your area and decide for yourself.

Just to let you know that i had my son at Salisbury hospital and they are amazing, the team of midwives are brilliant, couldn't have wished for a better hospital and you get 2 scans one at 12 and one at 20 weeks, igot an extra one at 9 weeks as i bled a little, but they were amazing then really helpful and reassuring.

Welcome to the scan lottery Emma!! It seems to be different wherever you live. I had mine pretty early to rule out a multiple pregnancy (family history), so I was only 9w6d, and there wasn't much to see. But some ladies on here have gone for their 12 week scan, been put back a couple of weeks, so had another booked at 12 weeks! Not fair!

The great news is that there are loads of private clinics around now, and they are becoming less expensive by the day. If you are feeling like you want one, check out yell.com for where you live.

Congratulations on your pregnancy I've just found out I'm PG too and have been told I don't get my first scan until 18 weeks, so you're not alone! It sounds awfully late, doesn't it?

Does anybody know how much it costs for a private scan?

Hi hun im not sure how much it costs for just a normal scan but i know the 4d scan up here is £250 (was quoted that from a private hospital in edinburgh) but couldnt afford to get it at the time so i just demanded a detailed scan at 32 weeks and got one

I don't get a scan till 20 weeks I looked for private hospital to get a scan and was quoted £110 but decided the money could be better spent. I will apparently get to hear the heartbeat at my 12 week appointment. It's so poo I really want a scan before, you could go and say you've had bleeding they'll scan you then! lol I can't get away with that though cause it happened at 7 weeks although then it was too small to see anything but a little heartbeat so at least I know it's there!

Thanks everyone. At least I know I'm not alone now and it's not just because of where I live. Not too sure about saying I've been bleeding - don't want to tempt fate - thanks anyway. Looks like I'm gonna have to be a little more patient.
