Elective Section?

After 20 hours of labour with DS I ended up with an emergency section as he was back to back then twisted in the birth canal and got stuck, I then developed pre-eclampsia with chest pain so had to be rushed to theatre for a spinal and they got him out altough we were very lucky as he was blue and unresponsive when first born but now very healthy!!
Given the trauma I went through, at my 12 week scan I saw the Registrar and confirmed that I wanted to go for a VBAC this time but have since sat back and thought everything through including the risks of a scar rupture, only 70% chance of VBAC being successful, having to be constantly monitored and the fact that the SPD kicked in at 16 weeks and doesnt seem like its going to get any better soon and have decided that I now want an elective.

I have an appointment with the Consultant at 28 weeks but I am so worried he will turn round and refuse my request or feel that I am just being silly about trying for the VBAC. At the end of the day I know that I will probably end up with an assisted delivery which could/would result in a significant tear or ultimately a section so just trying to prevent all of that trauma and try and have a bearable and safer delivery.

Do I sound unreasonable?
If he did agree to a section, do you think he would give me the date there and then and if so can the dates sometimes change depending upon emergencies that day?

I dont think that sounds unreasonable at all. Sometimes I think you just have to decide which would be less stressful for you. I had an emergancy section due to baby getting stuck and have no idea whether Ill choose a vbac next time or not.

The consultant should be fine. I know somebody that had a c section second time around and got to choose when she went in for it :) Not sure whether theyll give you the date there and then but I imagine theyll want to work out a date fairly quickly. Hope you get what you want whichever option you choose :D

I dont think its an unreasonable request at all because the best outcome is a healthy baby and a healthy mother! Every woman knows her own body and each womans personal circumstances are different and only you know whats right for you at a given time in a given situation. I was induced and my first baby ended up being delivered by emergency section after he became distressed. 16months later my second baby was delivered by section but for a very different reason. I wanted to have a VBAC but ended up with a fiery pain in the wound from my previous section. The mid-wives and consultant all said this was normal but I knew different as I couldnt stand up straight and could hardly walk. After several visits to the hospital it was decided that I COULD have a section at 37 +6days. As it turned out, just after my baby was born the Consultant turned to me and my husband and said that hihs was the right decision afterall and that the scar was so thin it would have ruptured! The professionals are there to help you but make sure they take your feelings into account!

If you want a section, you should be allowed one, i dont think he can say no!

As to your date, depending on where you live, with my 2nd i was given the date there and then but this time round i got a letter through the post with the date on. good luck at your appointment
