Hi

Can anybody tell me the effect of drinking COKE during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. I don't know whether this is a craving or not? But sometimes I got the feeling of it.

there was a study recently in to the affects of caffiene in first tri. i think, though im not certain and dont have the time to look up the study atm, it said there was a slight increase in risk of miscarriage when the mother was drinking large amounts of caffiene.

it was larger amounts so i wouldn't worry if its the odd glass of coke, maybe try the caffiene free stuff.

i loved coke when pregnant but it had to the the sugary caffiene loaded stuff and mt craving didnt start until 2nd tri, watch out later on mind cos caffiene used to keep Tally up kicking al night

I have drunk diet coke throughout my pregnancy, albeit only a couple of glasses a week!!

Experts say to cut down on caffeine, which I have - although still have 2-3 cups of tea a day!

I think things like caffeine and sugar in moderation are fine!

Ditto the first post. In moderation.

TBH its awful crap and it ruins your insides  I can't understand why people would put that stuff in their bodies anyways :rotfl:

Thanks for all the answers. I'm not so worried now...in fact I cut off taking COKE at all from now on

i love coke, used to drink it all the time, but m/w said im only aloud 1-2 cans a week because ive had lots of pregnancys im at increased risk of getting gestational diabetes (sp) :(

I found this on the food stadards agency website

"You should limit the amount of caffeine you have each day, but you don't need to cut it out completely. Caffeine occurs naturally in a range of foods, such as coffee, tea and chocolate, and it's also added to some soft drinks and 'energy' drinks.

It's important not to have more than 300mg a day. This is because high levels of caffeine can result in babies having a low birth weight, or even miscarriage.

Each of these contains roughly 300mg of caffeine:

3 mugs of instant coffee (100mg each)
4 cups of instant coffee (75mg each)
3 cups of brewed coffee (100mg each)
6 cups of tea (50mg each)
8 cans of cola (up to 40mg each)
4 cans of 'energy' drink (up to 80mg each)
6 (50g) bars of plain chocolate (up to 50 mg each). Caffeine in milk chocolate is about half that of plain chocolate
So if you eat a bar of plain chocolate and drink 3 cups of tea, a can of cola and a cup of instant coffee in a day, you'll have reached your 300mg limit.

Remember that caffeine is also found in certain cold and flu remedies, so always check with your GP or another health professional before taking any of these.

There's lots of other nutrition information for pregnant women too so worth bookmarking xx

I've changed to decaf but I still have one proper cup a day, but I seem to be enjoying balckcurrant robinsons drink more lately, and i was a big coffee drinker!

I hate coke but for some reason fancy it sooo much this last week or two, I limit myself to just one can of diet coke a day if I do have it just because its such horrible stuff and couldn't let myself drink much I'd worry about my teeth but I enjoy it so much right now when I do have it! I think like everyone else has said everything in moderation I am lucky in that I don't really drink tea I hate coffee and normally cant stand coke so had no trouble at all with caffeine in first tri but as Carlyr874's post shows the amount of caffeine you can have before worrying about it really is quite high, if I was you I would limit coke to a treat maybe allow yourself a can a day or a couple of cans a day but as a treat that way you will enjoy it more and know your well in your caffeine allowence!
