Eating peanuts during pregnancy

ugh, poor thing :(

is he alright now?

i have eaten the odd pack of peanuts but i 'should' be avoiding because of my history of ezcema and my partner has asthma

Well thats my point hun... I wouldnt even bother avoiding as we have history and not eating peanuts obviously did not help!!!!

xxxx

I am not supposed to eat peanuts either because of my hayfever and my husbands asthma, but I can see your point hun.

I haven't avoided food that says 'contains nuts' though

Oh Keely... Is he ok?

I've heard so many mixed things like "don't eat peanuts as it can bring on allergies" and then "DO eat some amount of peanuts because it helps introduce nuts to baby" etc...

...Personally, I've been eating nuts (small amounts, I was never a "nut" person to begin with).

Why oh why are there no definitive answers to anything?! Argh! xx

Why cant we eat peanuts???? OMG... I didnt know... :wall: I have been eating them for protein, as I am a rather strict vegetarian...

The general advice is if you or LO's dad has asthma, ezcema or any allergies you should avoid peanuts and peanut products.

Don't overly worry yourself hun

I've been staying away from them because of a history of allergies. Sorry to hear about your LO

I read that if you or your OH already have a nut allergy then there's a good chance that your child will have it too but if you have other allergies then eating peanuts during pregnancy can cause the child to have nut allergies.

I'm quite lucky that neither me or DH have any allergies whatsoever but I'm still not going to eat peanuts while I'm pg just to be on the safe side.

so sorry to hear about your little boy....it sounds horrible what happened to him. I hope he's ok now.

Its medical advice they give here in the UK that they are now revising because of so many problems. The UK is the only country in Europe (iirc, maybe Ireland) to advise PG women to not eat peanuts during pregnancy (this used to cover all women) and since they started doing this nut allergy rates have soared in children. Go figure

We now have the highest nut allergy rates in Europe.

In Spain afaik, there is no medical advice to avoid them whatsoever. So please don't panic and continue to eat them :)

The thinking elsewhere is that actually eating some peanuts in pregnancy introduces it to the baby in the womb and they have a tolerance of such foods once born. Not having any exposure to them they are more likely to be nut intolerant.

Also as others have pointed out elsewhere in the past, many countries nuts (peanuts) are a staple part of the diet and allergy rates in those countries are non existant.

While I was waiting for my first appointment with MW (which wasn't until gone 12 weeks!) I had serious cravings for peanuts - peanut butter on toast and satay chicken mainly! Only once I saw her and got all my paperwork out at home there was a small bit saying if either OH or I had hayfever to avoid them. OH has hayfever so have done since, otherwise I would have carried on! x

ah Keely poor little Ellis hope he is ok now- how scary!
i followed all the other advice when pregnant-soft cheeses etc
but i craved snickers bars and peanut butter so i ate them!
tbh i didnt see the argument not to-they never stopped women eating nuts when pg in the past and the amount of nut allergies in children has risen since they did..so what does that say!!
I haven't allowed Hayden to have peanut butter yet so i hope hes not allergic after me saying this..lol

Hope your LO in allright.

I had my first midwife appointment on friday and this was one of my burning questions because my little neice has a severe nut allergy. I was adviced to eat peanuts moderately during pregnancy, once a week so that the baby can build its immune system and not think of peanuts as a foreign body when it is born. Although everything is still as an advisory - do as you are told by your doctor as they know your medical history.

Apparently if the baby is deprived from peanuts in the womb, any contact with peanuts/nuts is treated as a foreign body and the natural defence mechanism is to have an allergy from it when they come into contact after birth.

The only allergy I have is hayfever, DH has none. My sister avoided peanuts and her daughter has this condition - so do as you are adviced because these things change regularly with research.
