I had a letter saying they were pleased to tell me I was low risk at 1/276 (around that number).

I thought nothing of it until I read that people we're getting results of 1/2000.

Now im terrified that I should be a higher risk?!

Please can somebody help me out as I really dont understand.

Thanks xx :(

I think your considered high risk if you are 1/250 or below.

If you work it out in percentage terms it's still a really low risk, try not to worry yourself and if you are really concerned speak to your midwife and they may offer you an amniocentisis.

Forgot to say at your 20 week scan they will do further tests by measuring around the babies neck area which can help identify if there is a downs risk, or not.

Remember also that even if you were given a 1/2000 result it doesn't mean that your baby won't have downs, there's just a lower risk.

I'm sure all will be fine

Thanks hun, I think I will.

Im just really struggling to understand why. Im 21 i dont smoke, im fit and healthy. I was thinking Id have a result up in the thousands. Im really upset :o( xxx

Oh try not to let yourself get too upset, I'm sure all is fine, if your midwife was concerned she would have discussed all the options available to you.   , do speak to her though as she may be able to reasure you.

Pregnancy as a whole is such a worrying time, it's one thing after another.

I think if they were worried they woudl have spoken to you at the time about further testing etc, I am sure as they said low risk that's what they meant. I think (I will confirm on Monday) that mine was 1 in 400 or something and he said that's the same chances as a 15yr old woudl have. Try not to worry but I would advise phoning midwife and asking for some reasurrance as that's what they are there for.
