Gabriella was weighed today and altho she's gaining, it's not enough so dr said to add formula now. Offer bottle after and in between feeds :-(

Presumably if she has been referred to a Dr then her weight gain is seriously low? I don't want to suggest going against a Dr's advice, but it does concern me the way some drs seem so keen to suggest switching to formula. (We faced this when our daughter was admitted into hospital for a tongue tie snip and the hospital doctors got hung up on her weight loss. My midwives were not impressed.) Have you had help from a breastfeeding counsellor?

We saw the dr for jabs so he weighed her. First of he wanted her to see a specialist. She weighs 9.6lbs and is 16 weeks tomorrow. She has always been slim but her gain has slowed down quite a bit. It prob doesn't help that because it's so hot here she just falls asleep when feeding really quickly.

Bless her, she is quite small. If she isn't losing weight though then personally I would want to see if there is anything a breastfeeding counsellor can suggest to help get her feeding better before (or at least alongside) adding formula. It might be that her latch could be improved or changing when/ how often you feed her or using different tricks to encourage her to feed for longer. Do you have an NCT group near you? They usually provide qualified breastfeeding support at groups or even at special clinics. It can't do any harm and they are going to be so much more knowledgeable than a GP about breastfeeding.

where do you live? she shouldnt be falling asleep on the breast

have you had her checked for tongue tie? Maybe try a bottle of formula a day rather than inteween feeds. because youll mess with your supply. she may just need abit of help - doesnt ean you cant do some combi feeding :)

Thanks for your replies girls.

We love in spain so no nct etc here. Back to uk for a bit next week tho so will see dr and perhaps bf expert then too.

In the mean time, I'm adding in a bottle to see if that boosts her weight a bit.

Thanks again x

My boy has dropped from 75th percentile to almost 50th, now 20 weeks, and other bf mums have had the same and tell me.its completely normal. Do yih mean losing weight or percentile? They said they're babies caught back up once they started weaning. I started weaning at 18/19 weeks after a consultant at hospital recommended it. We were there for a suspected cows milk allergy follow up as I was combi feeding but I believe it is a foremilk hind milk imbalance as my lo has always fallen asleep at the breast and no amount of tickling will keep him awake. I have begun to express with an electric pump just this week so I can switch to bottle feeding expressed milk to ensure he gets the hind milk. So far we have only expressed enough to make porridge with but I am already seeing a huge difference! We buy organix porridge as its wheat and gluten free.
