We have had our 6 week check today with the GP and been told that my daughter has a clicky hip and needs to have a scan. When the health visitor first came round when she was 10 days old she had an extra crease on her left leg which she said could be a sign of a dislocated hip, this is the same side as the clicky hip now. When she saw the hv yesterday the extra crease had gone so she said it was probably just an extra fat layer.

I am beside myself with worry now and just want to sit and cry.

Try not to worry hun, a lot of babies get clicky hips at first, its from the pressure of being forced out the birth canal, but it is extremely common and can usually be cured quite easily in a couple of months. I know a few babies who have had it, some worse than others but all are ok now. In some cases it may mean your baby wearing a harness for a few weeks to re-align her joint, but if it is only slight they will probably allow it to correct by itself. :hug:

im right there with you with the worry side of things my 3 week old son has to have a scan too coz he has an extra crease and the doctor felt his hips but still felt it was nessesery for him to have a scan...im so worried as ive read up on hip displacia on the internet which i shouldnt of done coz now im worse...but now i have to wait for the scan... let me know how your lo goes on..hope everything is fine :hug:

My LO had clicky hip at birth and had to have the scan. I wouldn't worry too much as it is really common for them to have when they are tiny and then to grow out of it. Ella was fine at the scan and honestly there must have been 50 other babies in the waiting room and they run the clinic every week!

hiya, my baby has a dysplaced hip, found because i requested a scan as its in my family; shes now in a harness going back on monday for another scan to see how things are going; dont worry about it too much hun, these things are best sorted now when they ar young, my cousins were in splint things for at most 4/5 months, its a drag to change nappies etc and clothes struggle to fit but both cousins are now fine and my amy isnt that bothered by the thing at all; amy has only mid dysplasia and my cousins were bad ones and they fixed; if they offer you a splint i would recomend you use it, because sometimes it will fix its self sometimes it wont. if the scan is the same as here in france its just like an ultrasound, not a problem at all; in my opinion its not ever as bad as they say on the net. if anyone wants to talk about it to me or ask anything pm me; good luck!!! :)

is there anything i can do to try find out if my little man has this as im waiting for an appointment for a scan and the doctors wont tell me either way wether he has this or not...plus when i was younger i had irritable hip could i of passed it on to him coz i had this (if he has it), ive had problems with my hips since i was little and doctors still dont know why, i get alot of pain in them after walking far or exercising, im just so anxious about it i hate the waiting.

He does move his legs but when i change his nappy he tends to lay slanted and with one leg layed bent and other straight, also his leg creases are not the same which is why hes been reffered for a scan.

It can be passed down the family as it has in mine, but i have always been told not to panic about it, it is treatable. my pediatrician rotated her hip joints and said he could feel it clicking back into place but im not sure i would recommend doing this yourself; i would just press for that appointment and get it looked at as soon as possible. Amy had her first scan at 1 1/2 mths and has been in the harness since she was 2 mths, its funny but she doesnt seem to have any outward signs of it, so its a good thing i had her checked just in case. at least i know it should be sorted before she is getting mobile;
apparently the big scarf thing that you can carry babies in can be used in a way that helps keep their legs in the froggy position that helps encourage the joints into the right place. sorry can reember its name;

here is a picture of Amy in her harness/ splint

I had this as a baby and am fine as an adult I just had to have a brace thing for awhile to bring it back in line, Kara has been scaned and first one they said the socket wasnt as deep as they wanted to see but had another scan at 8 weeks and all was fine, at the first scan they recommended putting reusable nappies or and extra disposable nappy on to put the hips in the right position they also said if I had a carrier to use it as this helps put the hips in the right position they said not to lie her on her side and this could effect the hips so these may be things to try between now and when you have the scan, but mostly try not to worry even if they diagnose it they can sort it out and there shouldnt be long term effects! :hug:

the harness doesnt look as scary as it does on internet..ur daughter looks happy enough bless her cutie..

its just taken me by suprise as id never herd of this even tho i already have a daughter.and dislocated hip sounds really painful and bad..ill just wait for the scan hopefuly i shouldnt be waiting too long.

To be honest its not so much dislocated as displaced where the ball of the hip joint doesnt quite sit close enough inside the socket. certainly in Amys case she doesnt seem to be in any pain and loves kicking her legs about at changing time!!!
