In the early days of my pregnancy I fully intended to sign up for all and any classes going, but then I was soooo tired I couldn't face it, and then went away for a month, and then got really busy, and, in short, I've not been to any classes at all!!

Have others been attending classes of any sort in preparation for the birth? Have you found them useful? Any recommendations with less than 10 weeks to go - yikes! - and xmas in the way???

Hi Skidoo, I've been going to NCT classes and they've been great. Even though I'll prbably forget everything they've taught me during labour but I've made some great friends in the area who I@m already meetingup with twice a week.
You may still be able to get onto an NCT course in your area. Log on to www.nctpregnancyandbabycare.com to check out your area co-ordinator.

There are also NHS antenatal classes but they can be during the day which is tricky if you are at work.

Hi, ive been pretty much the same as you....the only class ive managed to get to (2ce now! lol) is aquanatal....I really enjoy it, its sooooooooo relaxing. I do want to try the yoga but i just seem to be too busy! And if you go to them all i suppose the cost aspect is there aswell!

I really fancied aquanatal classes, but couldn't find any in my area. The closest is over in Hendon, which is impossible to get to without a car!

I called the NCT people a few weeks ago and they said their classes were all booked up, but they gave me another number to call which I've lost! I guess I'll find out when the NHS antenatal classes are and work will just have to give me the time off for them!

I have found my NCT class to be very helpful so far. Only had one class.

Going to another one tonight and I'll let you know!

i started aquanatal classes, went once a week, they really help at teh time, i left feeling nice and relaxed, but it was a chore getting myself to go, gave up in the end, altho they did make me feel good after, it was to hard to make myself get up off my sofa to go lol

LOL Layla, I did the exact same thing!!

I originally had intentions to attend them but after hearing from others who have been, I thought I would NOT go.

Women have been doing this for thousands of years, and if you have an urge to need to go then do so for sure, I would not be the one to tell someone not to go to them. I have done research, everyone will experience it differently and I can easily be turned off or become more nervous knowing certain things, so, I will deal with it when I get into the room LOL. As for other things you learn from the classes, that can be great, but my family and friends have been very helpful in that department so, I am not going!!

What you don't know can't hurt you... Anyway, in the town I live in they are showing videos from 30years ago, so hmmmmm.... not for me!! I am sure they are much better in the UK and other cities ( a bit more advanced, just not in this town...

My mother and I have been doing Yoga together for years so the breathing will really help. It will be important to know how to relax. As for the rest... I am not interested in knowing.

I have done the NHS parent craft classes and to be honest I wish I hadn't been. I didn't find out anything I didn't already know off here and they did more harm than good, scared me half to death!!

The impression I got from them is that's it now, your life's over. They made out like even if you manage a complication free birth, you may not bond with the baby, they may have something wrong with them, you might not be able to breastfeed, they will cry constantly, you will get no sleep and live like a zombie and never leave the house again. Then they scared you with cot death and fitting the car seat incorrectly blah blah, none of the nice bits like how much they are loved and wanted and how much pleasure they will bring.

Grrr it made me mad

Im starting my nhs anti natal in the new year......really looking forward to it for the main fact that i dont know anyone with babies or who is pregnant around my area, i moved down to be with my fiance at the beginning of the yea so i only really know his friends.....non of which have kids.
Suppose i just want some other mum company.

fayebalina - I agree with you in going then. It will be important for you to meet other pregnant women and mums to be. That was one reason why I though I might go to the classes. YOu can build nice relationships with other mums and they will be close to you through the stages of your baby's development, which is important!!!

I must say it would be nice ot find a group of mums (or mums to be) to go out and have coffee with every 2 weeks or so just to keep with reality. So for you I think it is a great idea!! :D

I have been to a couple of the midwife lead classes, and they have been great. I couldnt make one of the sessions and a MW came round to my house to do a 1-1. My OH went to a Dads class and it was really good, done by a bloke. He even got a 'Haines' mannual that shows you nappies full of poo, so you can tell 'normal' colours and consistancies LOL!!! PMSL at the thought of a Haines mannual instead of 'ford' or what ever it says 'baby' LOL.
Isnt it funny the difference between groups? Especially like Kim and I in the same city. Im really sad to hear most peoples experiences are negative. Mine were great, as were the MW, they were really positive (not in 'dreamy' kind of way tho)
Id love to be arsed to go to aqua natal, love water/swimming but too cold now, just wanna be snug!! LOL

i've been going to aquanatals every week since i was about 20 weeks, and i love it! i feel so refreshed afterwards, it's a really good workout (if you want it to be that is, you can take it completely at your own pace which is good)
it's been great to meet other pregnant ladies too, i have made some friends that i will definitely see again once our babies are here! and the MW who runs it is brill, she stays behind after the class for an informal chat in the changing area so if we have any questions she will answer then for us - which was great especially earlier on in the pregnancy when i didn't have MW appointments as often as now.

i'd recommend classes like that to anyone! :D

I have to say that my NCT classes have been very positive so far. Still not freaked out yet.

And I am still loving my swimming. So refreshing and it makes me feel so light (until I get out of the water again :) )
