I just read that in April 2009 Mothers will get child benefit from 29 weeks of pregnancy!!

How mean! why couldnt they start that now! That money would come in useful.

Child benefit

Hardly worth aving if you compare it to what it costs to bring up a child.

I remember having an argument on te telephone to a woman in the dept once as to why the second child is worth less than the first!?

Apparently you have more chance of having hand me downs for the younger child, hence the lower payment.

I asked her what I could pass down with 2 minutes age gap! She couldn't reply to that one :rotfl:

yeah but its better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick

child benefit is about £18 a week for the 1st kid, not much really if you think about half of that is spent on nappies, and washing etc but better than nowt!

It might only be £18 a week but that is still £198 more than we will get. Plus it will be more in 2009 so it will be more than that.

I think that is quite a lot of money myself.

Sorry ladies, I'm not saying that it's not worth having just doesn't really compare with child rearing expenses and Flame I wasn't disagreeing with your point of would be nice to have the payment from 29 weeks now...my statement and criticism was with the subject in general, maybe I didn't make that clear enoug, I'm a bit tired today with pg brain.

My point is as Hypnorm pointed out if you take off nappies etc... the first child may get more but the statement I was trying to make was that 2nd child was less than first by around £5.50 but the second child still needed nappies, clothes and baby milk etc...

Also if you compare with other countries,it's not actually that much.

If your lucky by 2009 it might be near to £20!!

I think child benefit is actually great! At the end of the day you would have had children regardless of the money so basically it's money for nothing. I don't rely on it to raise my child but it does come in handy even if it just pays for nappies that's something less I have to pay out for. They don't really have to pay it but they do so yeah thumbs up!

We put ours in to a seperate account along with our child and working tax credit, it means if we are a bit short one month we can use that as a top up.

When B&T were babies, I used to use it all up quickly but now it goes into their bank accounts and goes towards clothes etc...

Yes but its all relative. If they are going to increase child benefit and give it earlier they will have to find the money to do that from somewhere which means that either taxes will go up (so thank god for the current tax rates) or they will cut other benefits.

Im glad of the child benefit even though its not alot atm i get 121 pound a month for both my lo's and it comes in pretty handy for buying there nappies etc!
