My little one's skin above and below his lips turns blue sometimes, usually while we bath him. I'm pretty sure it's not because he is cold. It doesn't last long, and he seems to be fine in himself apart from this.

I heard that this can be a sign of lack of oxygen (sign of wind?). Has anyone else noticed this? Do you think I should be concerned?

It's a sign of wind, Grace gets it after each feed until she lets rip her manly burps lol

I would mention it to your hv for reassurance but my lo still has this even at 16 months! The other day her whole mouth and upper and lower mouth went a really dark blue. Apparently it can be quite common :/

I thought it was wind too hun! LO gets it too until she lets rip :) either end lol xx

Sent from my nearly buggared iPhone!!

Jack gets it after the bath when he's shivering, I wouldn't worry too much if he seems fine but like August mum says, maybe mention it too your HV x

That sounds like wind to me! Caleb gets it too. I was intrigued as to why it happened, and apparently it's because babies have thinner more translucent skin, and when their stomach has more wind in it, it gets bigger so their lungs can't inflate as much, meaning they don't get as much oxygen. The blue you can see is the deoxygenated blood going back to the heart xx

Chloe used to get this, was told it was wind, she was really difficult to wind x

I noticed this with Colby when we bath him too, that's really interesting. I wondered what it was, so glad I found this post

oh thanks girls, I feel much better now! I have an app with a GP in 10 days, will mention it then anyway.

funny though that it seems to mostly happen in bath - what could wind have to do with being in water??..

When Grace has the farts we plop her in a bath to have a good slash around as it apparantly really helps wind..................dont know how though but she is known for burping & farting in the bath :shakehead:

tinks oh that's funny... There is some connection there somewhere then!

Hey girls

I spoke about this to a GP recently, thought I'd share what she said.

Babies sometimes get so scared/amazed when you put them into water that they forget to breathe for a few seconds :) that's what causes the skin around their mouth to go blue. Sounds like an interesting and credible version to me - I think George does that :)
