hi, is there anyone here on benefits who could tell me if im entitled to any help now im pregnant and single?
i suspect its all stuff i wont get till after the baby is born but someone told me there is a claim you can make to buy the essentials?
thanks in advance

you can something called the sure start grant, which is a standard £500 grant. You have to wait until you are 27 weeks to apply for it and you get the form from the jobcentre and need to get a midwife to sign it, but its really easy to apply for. Sorry i can be of much help with other benefits, income support maybe? :D

Yep,sure start. You dont have to be on income support / benefits to get it.

i dont know your situation or your age, but if an adult, you can get incomesupport wich usually comes to about £45 pw and once the child is born you get child bennifit (i think thats about £18 pw) and then child tax credit. (with depends on you working/housing etcetc i think, so different for everyone.) But you deffinatly should get somthing.
You can also get tokens for milk and fruit and veg wich is £5.80 pw.

hope this helps.

You should be entitled to maternity pay as you are in work. Have a look on the DTI Gov site Have a squizz round that site as all the answers are there somewhere :)

Benefits are something else entirely and you'd be better off calling and asking direct to your local job centre what you can claim for. I doubt it'd be much if you are employed, but worth asking. But maternity pay is decent, and if you've worked x amount of weeks in the past x weeks (I forget the amounts), you can get it. Even if you leave your employment, you'd still be entitled to claim it, but a lesser amount. I quit my job before Christmas but as I've worked in it the last 4.5 years I can claim maternity pay via the jobcentre. It's slightly less overall than had I stayed and gone on maternity leave but thats ok for OH and me.

If you are employed, you are entitled to take maternity leave and its paid for, so no need to quit your job :)
