I've just got home from the hospital after needing to be re scanned to check baby's kidney growth. Sonographer was happy they are fine nothing to worry about. I then ended up in the antenatal day unit as baby is measuring quite small and there isn't much fluid around him.

I ended up wired up to heart monitor and she then did another scan to check the placenta is doing it's job properly (which it is).

I have to go back on Wednesday now to see consultant to discuss low fluid levels around baby, and whether i will have to go every week for check ups.

I'm panicking now I have no idea what the low fluid levels could mean.
Anyone else got any experience of anything similar?

    They will help and advise you and you are in the best place now, going for checkups etc, im sure all will be fine, thinking of you xxx

Hello,

I had the same situation, u can read my thread here:

http://www.pregnancyforum.co.uk/forum/v ... ht=#638658

Anyway, it all turned out fine for me when I got next scan at one week later. It is a possibility that your baby has swallowed some of the fluid and just not pee'd it back out :puke: lol. Think that is what happened to me. The only reason they are checking is just incase the placenta is not functioning correctly as I believe it is the placenta that produces the fluid?

I did panic also and it's hard not to but please try not stress and as Natural mamma has said drink plenty of water as believe it or not this does help also.

Hope this helps

    Glad babys kidneys are ok. I think I've read a few threads about low fluid on here and I don't recall it being a huge problem

Thanks everyone

They monitored his heart (that was ok I think) and they checked that the placenta was working properly (and it seemed to be).

I probably don't drink enough fluids so I am going to make sure I drink loads of water.
It has never been mentioned at my previous scans that the fluid level has been low but they have always been later in the day. I'm wondering if because this was early this morning if i hadn't drank enough water beforehand?

They seemed concerned he he small too but the Midwife I spoke to did say he is not off the scale he is borderline he could just be a small baby.

Going back to see the consultant on Wednesday so I suppose I'll just have to see what he says.

It depends how low your fluid is. I have this which was diagnosed at my 20 week scan, I have to have growth scans every 4 weeks but so far everything is normal (my fluid isn't mega low, just boderline). It might be because of the low fluid that baby is a bit on the small side so they will keep an eye on how baby is growing perhaps with regular scans and AFI checks. It's a very good sign that eveythings good with the kidneys and stuff..they always say to me that they're looking to see if baby is moving okay and is happy (which she always is) then they are happy..and also if the placenta is working okay. Sometimes it's just one of those things.

Hi

Glad baby's kidneys are fine, i'm sure the fluid thing will be too.

I had a scan about 10 days ago as they thought baby was small but she's ok, est 7 1/2lb at that scan, fluid was low, at 7. They like it to be between 11 and 20 and i have read if it goes below 3 they'll induce you due to the safety of the baby. Do you know what your levels are at?

Had another scan last week and fluid levels were back up to 17 so all is ok.

Sonographer said baby replaces fluid 3 times a day by peeing, not sure how true that is but i have also read keep fluid up by drinking.

Hope all is ok, its more a worry than anything else, its quite common really.

Thank you Poppy and Moomoo.

They never said what the fluid measured at and to be honest i never thought to ask, although I will ask on Weds when i go.

I was so relieved when the sonographer said his kidneys were fine that it shocked me a bit when she went on to say I had to go to the Antenatal unit because of his size and low fluid.

Sorry i'm rambling on.

If you got a report from your scan in your antenatal notes it should be on there. On mine it says AFI:...cms. It's great about the kidneys, because low fluid can indicate they aren't doing their job which would be picked up on the scan, but if they're fine then thats very good news. Like MooMoo said fluid can go up and down dramatically..it might be that when you are scanned next it will have gone back up to normal levels :)

All that's written in my notes is sent to Antenatal day unit because of low AFI no numbers just an arrow pointing downwards.

I'm glad his kidneys are fine after looking it up on the internet i've read it can be because of a kidney problem so that is re assuring at least.
