Congratulations!!! We're doing sing and sign atm, just waiting for her to learn her first sign, i think she's trying but she doesn't know the signs yet lol

awww were starting makaton (baby sign language) in march were really looking forward to it.

I thought about baby sign language but my HV advised against doing it.
Her opinion was that babies do learn the signs and will use them (great I thought) but then that instead of (in time) saying to you "milk please mummy" they just sign, or instead of telling you properly that they are hungry say they just pat their tummies. Her telling me that really put me off the classes and thus me and LO never bothered with them. He's speaking now so pointless even thinking about going but just wondered what experiences everyone else has had when their LO's get a little older if they have been taught signing from a young age?

We go when we have time and I use some signs with her regularly. All the reading I've done suggests it actually aids communication because it's coupled with spoken language, it's not instead of spoken language. So, for example, a baby that signs "milk" and says "muh" is more likely to be understood and have their attempt at the word milk reinforced than one who just says the sound "muh" if you know what I mean. There are kids of all ages at our group and none of them are late speakers, some are pretty early speakers in fact.

Becky can now sign milk, more and duck. :) She's a chatterbox too so it certainly hasn't affected her babbles so far

Thats pretty much exactly what we were told, you say the words as you sign them so babies learn them not just signs.

Sounds like another uneducated HV to me, baby signing is fun and we enjoy the songs i dont think it's going to give her any head start etc as we're not doing it properly yet
