I picked up a few snacks yesterday to keep in my bag for when we are out, like those goodies ones that are natural ingredients, just some cereal style bars and carrot sticks (more like a crisp than a carrot!) and one the back it says not suitable for under 12 months! Why?

Are they hard? Could be risk of choking or do they contain honey? I noticed some snacks are different. Ps some of the crisps aimed at babies cost more and have a higher salt and fat count than normal crisps. My lo loved the carrot crisp things but they are horrible

No honey or anything too hard, we're BLW so I thought most things would be ok, better check out the salt content, maybe I'll stick to fruit in my bag!

I did blw with lo and bought some bits for him. I found supermarket cheap crisps had the least salt and he preferred fruit than the snacks anyway. Cant help but think they are a waste of money tbh.

My mum used to get salt and shake crisps and take the salt packet out

I was looking at these type of things in Tesco 2 days ago, I also noticed that alot of them were saying from age 12months up & I couldn't figure it out. But there was ones there for age 7 months & up, cant for the life of me mind the name.

Is it maybe to do with the size of them, maybe it would be easy for LO to choke? If not it must be the ingredients

xxxxxxx

I think they are just covering themselves. I went through the ingredients and its all organic natural stuff and only trace amounts of salt, they are also big enough to hold and melt in your mouth! I think they are a rip off too. Ill b sticking to fruit and maybe make some of the snack ideas in the BLW book and take them out with me, there are some carrot muffins that sound good!

My friend introduced me to these dried apple crisp type things, like when you put it in your mouth it goes soggy really quick, her daughter is only 8 months (she was 2 months prem so should be 6 really) and she gives her a few every day and it says only suitable from 12 months and we did the same checked all the ingredients and the only thing we could come up with was them being a bit over-cautious with the risk of choking I've given some to Angel and she hasn't even gagged or anything like that and she hasn't had any reaction to them at all, so I didn't see the harm xx

They sound nice Lauren! Where do you get those from?

Think sometimes it's cos the company's make things for tw and not blw so they wouldn't be on harder things till older. Holly has some of them cos she eats normal hard things with blw!

I gave my LO carrot sticks from 6-7 months she love them and never choked on them :) You can get packs that are from 7months too where the sticks or more like a huge wotsit than a stick they should be next to packs of the rice cake things in the baby isle! But my LO was fine on the other ones too!

The apple crisps sound cool, i'm sure i've seen dried banana too & pineapple, I wonder how you'd make something like that yourself? Mind you u probs cant because it would go off??

Sarah - I gave my LO a bit of banana in his hand, he's only ever had it mashed, he shoved it in his mouth, granted he had a mouthfull that was spilling out his mouth, but he enjoyed it....OH took it off him told me not to do it!? Surely he's old enough for that sort of thing?

If I give him carrot sticks, should it be raw carrot?

xxxx

Kynon loves bananas, it just mushes so easily in thier mouths, it was one of the first foods he had so can't see why he can't start having finger foods like that just now even with tw, maybe your oh is just worried with the reflux problems. Sweet potato chips melt easily too. I bet you can make apple chips, there is a lady on here who is a strict vegan and she dries lots of things, might ask her how you woud do it!

I'm off to do my weekly shop tonight & I normally plan LO's meals before hand. I'm gona do a bit of googling see what I can make myself....he's at the age now I think he'd like something to munch on himself, dont wana give bread yet, with my eldest LO it was rusks but they dont advise that now.

xxxxxxxxxx
