Just thought I'd let you know, I did a 3 crammer hour course this morning called Lifesaver for Children and Infants.. basically it was aimed at 0-1 and 1-puberty.

It was through St Johns Ambulance and they do them in all different places all over the country. I would thoroughly recommend it (except mine was a 9 o clock start on a saturday!!). I've done emergency first aid for sports, and it was similar thing, though obviously for children some things are done differently to adults.

It focusses on airways and breathing, and goes through unconcious and breathing, unconcious and not breathing, choking and blocked airways, and bleeding/bandages/slings. They have mannekins that are like children, and also ones that are little babies. They go through things for adults too and explain the differences, so it's an all round course really if you've never had any experience of emergency first aid at all.

It cost me £18+VAT so about £21 ish, and I would say it's well worth it. It's not a replacement for hospital, but is meant to assist in simple things that you may not have otherwise realised you could easily do, and to keep the child going while you're waiting for an ambulance. There's an all day course too which I think is called Early Years First Aid, which is the one the nursery nurses use I think, and people putting the course towards a qualification - it's longer and more expensive and I don't know what goes on in it :)

Just to let you know really :) as a first time mom to be I feel a lot less worried that I'd ever be stuck waiting for an ambulance knowing that there's a few things I could do to help in the meantime.

I did mine before stephen was born michelle and if i hadnt of done it when stephen choked very early on, he might of died while i was waiting for the ambulance!
Worth doing ladies, when they get older they get into all sorts

I looked into baby first aid....my local centre says "bring a baby" so I don't know why that it but obviously have at least another month before I can attend one.

Sounds like an excellent course. I might look into whether they do any in my area. :)

My sister did one as part of her job. She said to me the other day that shes glad she did because her little boy nearly choked on some finger food and she knew exactly what to do... phew.

Definately worth looking into :D
