Hi ladies,

Freaking out a bit. I ate Vietnamese food yesterday and ordered a chili chicken noddle salad ( cold ) that had bean sprouts in it. Ate it all! After I googled and found out you are not supposed to eat raw bean sprouts and so scared I have done something bad!! Think I have been eating it many times.. Feels like you cant eat anything!

Do you have any advise?

Hello,

I'm tri hopping!
During my first trimester I was so worried about eating the right things and cut certain things out that I loved like goats cheese. The way I feel about it is as long as you aren't eating the 'wrong' things in excess it'll be fine. I know there are obviously things to avoid like certain fish but when you think what mothers in other countries eat or going back just a few years ago when all this advice wasn't around. If you worry and watch every little thing you will be forever on edge.

I've never heard of not eating bean sprouts. I've eaten them many times during my pregnancy. I'm 30 weeks and lo seems to to happy!

I'm not an expert, but I am familiar with the feeling of panic after ingesting something and then googling to find I wasn't supposed to!*

As I understand it, the risk with uncooked bean sprouts is of contracting Listeria and E Coli. I think the chances of you contracting either of those following a one-off bean sprout meal is very very low. If you did contract either, again as I understand it you would develop symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea or fever) that would let you know that something was wrong. If you feel well I wouldn't worry about it at all. For the sake of avoiding anxiety it's maybe better not eating uncooked sprouts again while you're pregnant.

(*So far in this pregnancy I have had: raw meat, pate, prosecco, unwashed vegetables... and I spent two weeks cleaning out my mum's cat's litter tray.)

Thanks ladies! Makes me feel better :)

Asked my mum about what she did during pregnancy and she said she stopped drinking.. that's it! So I think we all worry a bit too much these days :) xx

My mum didn't even stop drinking!

(I don't think she was drinking heavily... but she did admit to having the odd wee drink now and then.)

I have cats and can't avoid cleaning out litter trays.

TBH I personally think the risk of contracting food poisoning from things like cheese and deli meats and raw veg is so incredibly tiny, I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't drink alcohol when I'm pregnant, and I'm veggie, but if I wasn't I'd still not eat liver and liver products because of the vitamin A. Everything else though would be fair game lol.

Missing goats cheese sooo much too... last week I just had to melt the crap out of some on some toast to kill the urge. Cooking it is fine, right?

Wahey... Phoenix... A fellow veggie. *high five!*

Do you know the flu jab contains chicken!?

chill out. its fine.

the reason they sy not to eat most things (exception is things with vitamin a and unpasturised things) is because of the risk of poisoning.

ive had runny eggs, mr whippy ice cream, coffee, tea, seafood... you name it. im just a little more picky.

last time i was pregnant i even had a little pate on tost with my xmas meal - midwife said it was fine because it was such a small amount and i could have wine too if i wanted, but i didnt have the wine.

pregnancy is so much better whn you just chill.

Thanks everyone!

I know, I am too paranoid. Guess because we tried for so long and went though IVF I just want to do everything perfect! Will try to chill a little more :)
