my DF (may!) be buying me a laptop soon and i was just wondering - if i wanted the internet would i have to pay for it even though my mum has the internet on our computer - my mate said that i could probably buy a box and plug that into the phone line and then it will just run off my mums internet - is this right?!?

your laptop will already be set up for wireless networking, so just buy a wireless router (lynksys for example), plug that straight into youe phone socket, then your mums pc into that via whatever modems etc she has, then hey presto!

Yip I have a laptop, the internet in the house is wireless so anything that's internet connectable in here will automatically have a broadband connection into it. Basically if you have say AOL on your main PC you can just load it to the laptop too and sign on as normal. It's easier if you go wireless, connecting anywhere and everwhere is amazing, I sit in the garden online in the summer!!! Usually early mornings in bed etc, places I'd not get an internet wire too. Anyway if your not going wireless just buy an internet connecting wire (most laptops are actually sold with one) and plug it into a phone socket like normal. Hey presto you can connect. It's the phone number in the house that pays the bills, we have 3 computers that all run off one line in this house (wireless) but all it would take would be 3 phone sockets and 3 wires if we ever went back to normal. You pay one bill per phone number/house if that makes sense you could connect a thousand computers to it if you liked!!

Good luck with the purchase and try for dual processors, tad more expensive but a million times faster and you can do more than one task at once without it being slowed down etc.

Happy shopping

better explanation than mine lol

I just got an acer aspire and its FAB!!!!

Cant wait till I can sit in the garden with it and chat to all you lot :D

or better yet steal the neighbours connection lol....I do for the wii cause i cannie find my wireless card...

I struggled with linksys too, I ended up taking it back cos I switched my mobile phone to Orange and I get wireless internet for £5 a month! :D

If you can switch to orange soon I'd recommend it, before I was paying £20 a month and the linksys was £60 (but I got a refund on it).... all the Orange equipment was free :D Bargain!

What Linksys do you have?

You need to configure your router to the internet by plugging it into your laptop

Ive never had a problem with linksys routers....

Even easier these days though is to just get a wireless card to put into the comp or one that just plugs into the usb....And you will probably find that if the laptop is new it wil already have a lan card in it...

Haha that's soooo sneeky. :rotfl: There are 2-3 wireless signals around here I can pick up but mine's locked so only my registered PC's can access it. I had one of those geeky firms come round (£30!) and secured the whole thing watertight. Also got them to configure the printer to all the computers too!! Might as well get my hour's worth £30 for 5 minutes or and hour, I kept finding him things to sort out till the hour was almost up!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
