Anyone tried breastfeeding without any help?

I bottle fed my son but want to try breastfeeding this time. Trouble is and yes I know midwives have seen it all before but I want to do it in private, without anyone showing me what to do. I don't want to get my baps out in front of anyone, even in hospital. That's what put me off years ago so I didn't bother to try.

i did try when i got home with Colby as i felt the same, she did go on but wouldnt stay on and i think out of all the times i tried she had only a few suckles and was sick after it so i decided to stop, plus the fact my nipples were so painfull

I got the book "What to expect when you're breastfeeding...and what if you can't" by Clare Byam-Cook and read it before the birth. It explains exactly how to do it and all the mechanics of how it works so noone needed to show me, I latched her on straight away and didn't even get sore nipples those first few weeks. I am similar to you, only get my baps out in front of my DH. You get used to BF without showing anything with a bit of practice

Thanks a lot you two, I'll definately get a book. The only one I'd feel comfortable in front of is my son, I thought so anyway until he asked me to breastfeed Jade when she's born as he wants to try! He will be 7 and a half so I think not.

Ha ha I was induced 8 times by 5 different doctors and when I had to put a gown on I got Ryan's dad to hold the blanket up so they didn't see my baps.

gt help chick. My sister was the same as you and ended yup with severe mastitis due to poor attachement and had to stop feeding after two weeks.
You only need help for a week - after that its plain sailing!
Swallow your inhibitions and get advice.

The M/W will prob want to see you breast feeding before you leave hospital to make sure the baby is latching on properly.

Budge, thanks for the advice but if I can't manage myself, I'd rather stick with the bottle again.

ha ha ha I wish I could have been so picky about no-one seeing my boobs!
after I had the LO she was put onto my chest and then after five the midwife asked if I was going to breastfeed and whether I was ready to attatch her and I have got to say the midwife was great, she showed me how to latch her on and explained a fw things but when I got home LO wasnt attatching very well so my nipples were very sore and I had t get them out on numerous occasions for the MWs and a student MW!

Im sure if you ask they will allow you to do the first BF in privacy, but please be aware that they will be wanting to see you do it at some point ot make sure it is being done right.

BF is the best thing I have done and out of four of us (me and my sisters) half BF half bottle fed.
at the beginning I wasnt fussed on everyone seeing my boobs and watching me but I am so glad that I stuck to it, it is one of the best things I can do for my little girl, and when you get people saying that they thought that you wouldnt stick to it but you proved them wrong and they are so proud of you (plus you dont get the BF is beter lectures lol) it makes it all worthwhile even more and the sense of achievement and you know ing that you are doing the best for your baby, I just cant explain it, I just know that if I had to do it again I know I would BF all over again.
Just think of the times when you dont have to go downstairs in the freezing making a bottle!

Honestly, after a while (when I first started I would only allow women in the room ie mother and sisters) when I got more confident I now whip them out in public!

If the only thing you are worrying about is people seeing your boobs, then please try and BF and tell them your worries, but if you try and find that you really cant do it, then at least you can say you tried

Thanks Kristal, you definately will never get me doing it in public but as long as they understand for me it'll be a private thing as right or wrong, he loves my baps and I see them as a sexual thing then I will give it a go.

If they were for feeding babies only then they'd develop with your pregnancy, that's what I've always said.
