I work 2nights a week and its not so much staying up all night as I try to get as much sleep as poss before I go in. But the lifting sometimes I am sure I can feel the strain. I just wanted to know if anybody else works. In caring and how they have got on in pregnancy?

I don't work in care but I am a full time carer. I looked after mum whilst I was pregnant with my son but Im actually feeling it more this time. As you say it's mostly the lifting and taking weight I can feel getting a little harder xx

tapatalking!!!

Yes I did at the beginning but gave it up as it was just a job on the side for extra money. The smells & lifting put me right off as I felt so sick & had bad backache. My advise would be to tell your employer sooner rather than later so that they can do a risk assessment on you. Maybe they will get others to do the lifting bits & you just light duties etc. unfortunately my employer at the time didnt really give a crap & started sending me to smokers houses so i just jacked it in after that last straw!! xx

Hi natasha! I'm a carer I work full time long days too..... With elderly I do clients that I use hoists.... Single and double calls.... If I'm with a double up it's not so bad as the other carer moves the hoist but stil use them whilst on other calls just be careful I'm getting to the point I just want to start maternity leave as some clients I'm constantly standing up.... Bending down..... Up .... Down etc annoying and uncomfortable especially if my princess is having an active morning! Spk to ur boss and get them to give u easier clients I'm doing less hoisting and hard work than I did before most of my clients now use Zimmer frames ... Hope you don't feel alone :) xxx

If proper moving and handling procedures are in place, you shouldn't need to be lifting anyone. I can imagine that pushing the hoist around may become more difficult, but even when not pregnant you shouldn't be lifting. If done safely and in the correct way, M&H shouldnt be a problem. x

Hi, Im a carer too and our policies and procedures means that basically i have been pull off all calls that deal with hoists and lifting, even tho i felt fine doing them its all down to the risk assessment, every company is different. could be worth having a word with your boss. i found mine to be a decent guy and very understanding.

Hi Hun I'm an operations manager for a social care company and your employers should have completed a risk assessment as soon as they found out you were pg.
Firstly you should not be doing any lone working unless systems are in place to ensure your safety eg giving you a mobile phone if out in the community etc
You should not be completing any people moving people activities this includes being the second person when using the hoist
Manual handling should be kept to a minimum

If you need any help send me a msg x
