Harley is nearly 6months now i started him with spoon feeds at 4months by 5months was having 2 meals a day but the past month nothing?
since having solids he dont sleep and crys alot and sick alot and always seems in pain? i havnt had him weighed for a while but he is still a chunky monkey

but im worried Dior was on 3 meals a day by this age yet harley seems ages away from even 2 spoon fulls a day :?

Is he happy on just milk for now? It might be that he just isnt ready. I doint know really. What does the hv say?

hes happy pon milk but i can see he is hungry often i havnt spoken to the HV i wont go the docs. i hate them all at my surgry.
its just strange how he went from feeding fine to now nothing. hes had half a baby jar today yet cryed all night scrunching up in pain :?

what is the latest a baby should go with out solids?
i no they recomend waiting untill around 6months? but what is the latest after that?

Hi Dionne

I don't know much about it but do you think that because Harley was 5 wks prem you've got a bit more time ? Most babies need extras when milk alone isn't fulfilling them but if Harley's weight is stable and he's thriving then I wouldn't worry but just keep perservereing with the feeding and I'm sure he'll start taking more soon. I noticed Olivia was more windy when I weaned her - do you think Harley has got trapped wind which is making him scrunch up?

Have you tried him with finger foods? When I weaned Olivia at 6 months I always gave her a rice cake/slice of fruit/soldier of toast/cooked carrot batton etc for her to hold then I would whip the spoons in her mouth inbetween!

The HV was saying that when they start to chew on food and move it round their mouth with their tongue it develops new muscles which help their speech development.

I have been told that babies should be eating solids bu 7 months as it helps jaw development which aids talking. I agree with Lucy I would give him some finger foods, like banana, rice cakes, pear etc. I wouldn't worry about Harley, Seren was not really eating much when she was 6 months, would just have finger foods but now she is like a wee gannet and is eatring 10 month food, and doesn't need anything blended.

I don't have any suggestions about the pain though sorry :( Is there another surgery near you, I think you have a good reason to change.

im going to use this thread now so i can keep track on what he is haing that is causing him pain.

weatabix is a huge NO hes had it 4 times and every time he has screamed none stop for about the following 5hrs.
he had a baby tin of egg custard and apple yesterday and cryed and was sick all the way home for 3hours.
this morning he has had 4 spoon fulls of yogot and has cryed himself to sleep and sick lots??
rusks is the same to but not as bad as weatabix
he loves spoon feeds though but its afterwards?

Only just seen this thread, have you tried things like pureed carrot, and pears? Maybe try and stay away from wheat and dairy for a while? Charlie didnt eat a great deal at first, so i wouldnt worry too much about the amount. I know the problems you have with your GP Practice, and i really think you need to change to a different one, why not give the HV a quick call, even if you dont really like her! Id be more concerned about the pain than the amount he's eating?
As Lucy and Shona have both said, why not give him a little go with some finger foods!

Hi, excuse me for being thick. Is it alright to give a 5month old finger foods like rice cake etc? How do you stop them from chocking on it. Very interested in doing it, especially if it helps speech development, plus I think my son would enjoy it if he could control putting something in his mouth himself but I am just worried that he would choke.
How do you do it?? Please help?

Im the same freya?? Harley seems like a tiny baby to me. he has only just started holding his toy? but im going to give it a go maybe with banana so he can just squash it all in

well any way. Harley was all fine and happy today i then gave him some apple and he cryed for the following 3hrs. being sick. not a lot just thick smelly sick and all scrunched up grunting :wall:

Dionne... I think you have to get some advice from your gp. Maybe get a referal to peadiatrician. I would stay well away from eggs, dairy and wheat products. I would also suggest you gently cook fruit & veg for him. If he appears to be in so much pain, also avoid raw fruits & veg. Simmer banana in a little apple juice.

I hope get gets better - such a worry, that why you should consider seeing someone.... not good for him to cry that long.

That does sound like a lot of crying Dionne, like the others have said is there any other surgery you could take him to or could you perhaps take him to an out of hours surgery/hospital A&E but during the day when it'll be quiet?

Freya and Dionne, Kina posted a really interesting link about "Baby Led Weaning" it explains how if the baby is in charge of what it puts in its mouth they wont choke, the baby wont take the food to the back of their mouth until they are ready. I was nervous when I started Olivia on finger foods but in the beginning she would just spit them out or just suck on the food until it was mush. Here's the link if you're interested, the most relevant bit is "Why won't he choke". I know the site mentions about breastfed babies but my friend started finger foods with her 5 month old boy after I showed her the website and he is bottlefed. http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintroductie/vast_voedsel/rapley_guidelines.html

Hiya Dionne I was wondering if he's OK now? Have you managed to get him in at the doctors yet?

Hi Urchin no i havnt been the docs yet.
i just havnt given him any thing other then milk then he is the happiest lil boy that smiles all day and sleeps all night.

but i no i need to get him on solids at some point.

its hard when you have had one child then the 2nd child dont follow how you expect?

yesterday he had 3spoonfulls of carrot he would have ate loads but i only gave him 3. he was fine with it. so dont no if it was the fact he had so little or if the carrot was good for him???

but im scared for life of weatabix  he was in such a state after it :?

do you think i should just stick to trail and error for the next few weeks see if i can see whats right for him ect or do you think i should get him the docs now?

Dionne I would perhaps go to the docs. The fact he reacted badly to weetabix could be a sign of an allergy or a food intollerance. I am not a Dr so I don't know for sure but I would get it checked out to be on the safe side.

Ok Beanie thanks. Im going the docs for Harley to get his Pneumococcal vaccine so im going to ask to speak to a doctor about it.

Yeah it can't hurt to discuss this with the doctors, I'd maybe stick with the basics like carrot for now, and talk to your doc about it.

hiya bumping ths back up to the top? is this solved yet dionne?

just a thought the do the foods you said made him sick all contain dairy?

egg custard
weetabix (im guessing with milk?)
rusks, again with milk?

it could be a dairy intolerance?

have u tried reducing his milk dionne  .
Every baby is different so i wouldn't worry. So long as he is putting weight on.
Have you treid him with soft biscuits or soft friut and veg to chew on? Maybe he needs to get used to solids.
Sorry im not much use.
