Morning everyone :)

My little Martha will be 5 weeks on Sunday, is exclusively breastfed and I'm feeding on demand. She's gaining well, although health visitor did query mild jaundice when I saw her yesterday. Gp came to look at her, but Martha was screaming so had gone bright red instead. GP said she couldn't tell but her eyes looked nice and white so said all okay.

I gave her a big feed at about half 10/11 last night and she went down at about half 11. I woke at 5.45 and she was fast asleep, half an hour later and she's still gone. Is that okay? I've just moved her from the Moses basket to my bed to feed her and she's still hasn't woken up! That's nearly seven hours... All okay?? Xx

Ordinarily I would say it's fine, my daughter slept through from 5 weeks but if they've queried jaundice I'd wake her just in case. It doesn't always affect the eyes, especially if it's only just come on. But it makes them very sleepy and they get themselves into a vicious circle. My daughter had jaundice, but she was only a few days old, if I'd let her she would have literally slept constantly so I had to strip her off to wake her every few hours.

Bethy I have the exact same worry. My 5 week old has slept 9pm -5am the past two nights in a row! She is formula fed - but even still I am a bit nervous! xx

As j Anne said, as they have queried jaundice I would wake her.

My daughter was formula fed and slept 8-8 from 5 weeks and hv said it was fine as long as not premature, low birth weight, breastfed, jaundice etc

At that age my midwife said not to let Lily go longer than 7 hours without a feed, she was a little baby though so maybe that's why. I used to wake her to feed her and she would dream feed before dozing off again.

Ah I've been waking Alex when he does that! He did it a couple of times at 5weeks and hewn I think I ruined his flow, he's asleep just now after being awake for most of the day so maybe I'll be lucky.

Ill ask the HV as although he's tucking the weight on he's still technically premature so I'm not sure if he's "allowed" to do it x

I'm a huge believer in let sleeping babies sleep, and I've never woken either of mine unless it's been for a specific reason (had to go out for an appointment or something).

That being said, I'd say if there's a medical query, you're probably best waking her if she's sleeping so long in one go... Just until you know she's clear of jaundice.

Otherwise, I'd let her sleep xx

Thank you everyone, I'm sure she is a touch yellow, so will keep an eye on it. I woke her last night to feed, looks like she might have slept straight through again if I hadn't. She was jaundiced after birth and the midwife just said to keep feeding her, so hopefully the yellow will break down by itself again, fingers crossed xx

During the day I left Alex by the window and that cleared his jaundice up x

Let the sleeping baby sleep they would wake if they were hungry? A couple of days after my little boy was born he slept a full 9 hours I was so concerned so mentioned it to the Mw who said it was too long for him to go without a feed but when he continued to do it (not for as long) I did tell the Mw that I wouldn't wake him to feed him & she said it was fine as he was feeding well during the day & he was gaining weight!

In the first few days he did have jaundice but he was getting enough fluids into him so they were more than happy with him going so long.
