Hi everyone, Cahal is due to have his 2nd meningitis c vaccination tomorrow and I'm in two minds whether to go through with it or not.

Two weeks after his first dose he developed a non-blanching 'meningitic' rash, spent two night in hospital which made him miserable, and was pumped full of antibiotics which made him ill. Obviously I was relieved and very thankful for the care he received before getting the all clear but I don't want to put him through it again if it was just a reaction to the vaccine. If he were to have the second dose and a rash were to appear then I couldn't ignore it and he would have to go through it all again :wall2:

so far I have spoken to a health visitor, she gave me a number at the general medical enquiries board but their pharmacist wouldn't speK to me cos apparently the uv should have rang as they don't speak to joe public. I have also spoken to nhs direct and my sil who is a nurse. No-one gas been able to reassure me it wouldn't be likely to hapoen again so now I'm in a bit of a quandry...

What would you do? Refuse? Delay? Consent? I'm so confused about what to do!

My minds a little hazy on this but arent they supposed to have this jab 3 times?

Personally if it were me i would have it, i assume they need to have the entire course of the jabs required to have full or at least maximum immunity. I know its scary to think that it might happen again, but it could be a whole lot worse if he wasnt as protected as he could be and then end up contracting the disease and being very very poorly.

Obviously my situation was different to yours, but Paige had a bad reaction to her first lot of jabs. About 2 days after them she cried for 5 days almost all the time. Wasn't sleeping properly and refusing alot of her feeds, it was horrible. Calpol had little or no effect. I was going to delay her 2nd lot of jabs and I really didnt want to go but I did, and she had been perfect with them. Didnt even need a tiny bit of calpol. I couldnt believe it.

I would say go for it, but just be very aware of any changes. Its alot for him to go through if it happens again, but at the same time, worse could happen if he werent to have the jabs.

Sorry if thats no help. x

Thanks for the replies, I'm still stuck though I'm afraid. I'm now going to take him along anyway and see if the hv will talk to me about it. If she can't though, I'm going to delay until I can speak with someone who is informed enough to give me a better response. I know there are vaccination specialists out there, I guess I'll just gave to find one!

Does anyone know if a delay in final doses of the primary course of any of the other vaccinations affects efficacy at all?

I'm really not sure and I think I would do what you say and take him along and ask them on the day.

It's a hard one xx

after having a child that had meningitis id recommend to have it done she was in hospital for 2 weeks in isolation and was hardly consious the 1st few days her veins kept collapsing everytime she pulled her canulas out and really was the worst 2 weeks of my life x at end of the day though its down to you to chose if he has the rest or not x

Well, I took him along and the hv basically advised I wait until after Christmas in case it happens again. She also suggested it may not have been the men c vaccine (if it was a reaction at all) but one of the others. She has advised that I should try and speak with the consultant he was admitted under and what he says, so ultimately the buck has been passed again :wall2:

the consultant will pron know alot more :)
i didnt give my 1st 3 the whooping cough jab as it can cause severe problems on my side of family but then they combined it and i took the chance and my ds is ok

the consultant has said I should go ahead with the next doses but be aware of any changes in Cahal. If anything doesn't look right then I'm to take him to hospital straight away. The HV said we'll automatically get another appointment in the post so I'll just wait for that to come through, get them done and then spend the next week frantically checking the baby lol!
