I have heard people mention that the docs ignore your ov date and always take your lmp. Have my scan 2moro and will be 11 weeks by my lmp or 10+3 by my ov date (I know the day I conceived). If i'm 10+3 this is not a proper nuchal scan as certain things don't form until the 11th week of pregnancy. Anyone else been scanned this early and told to come back for a repeat scan? Thanks ladies

i was scanned at 10 weeks with my DS in 2006 and they didn't ask me to go back for a second one.

And i have my scan on thursday and i'll be 10 weeks with this one too. i doubt they'll ask me back at 12 weeks. but i could only hope they do!!! :D

They always tend to go by your LMP. If you have long cycles then you can expect to be put back a couple of weeks or x number of weeks depending on how long your cycle was at the dating scan.

For the nuchal scan you have to be something like 11 weeks + 3 days and not more than 13 weeks + 6 days or something similar.

Is it a private or nhs scan? If it's a private scan I would have thought that it would be defined on their website. Hopefully the NHS would just ask you to come back.

Good luck x

I know the date I conceived too but I've never been asked - they just go by your lmp. After my 12 week scan they changed the date by a day (seems a bit fussy, but hey-ho). The scan I had at 12 weeks was a dating scan, not a nuchal scan so I don't really know fully how they work - they're not offered here, or maybe it's only in high risk situations.

The reason a nuchal scan is only usually done after 10 weeks is because before that baby is too small to tell. If you are having a nuchal scan and the sonographer can't see, then they should be able to make you another appointment I would have thought.

Good luck!

They go by your LMP date, not when you ovulated. It's kind of a one size fits all these days, rather than trying to work out ovulation for every individual (as many have no clue) its much easier to standardise it and go from the first day of a womans last period.

For the Nuchal it is supposed to be 11 weeks onwards, as before that there is not enough growth etc to get decent measurements they require. I had mine at 11+3 and my consultant said it was cutting it fine and we might not get the best results even then. He'd have preferred a few more days even, to 12 weeks. Luckily all was ok and he got his measurements.

Of course, the window of time is narrow, 11 - 13+5 iirc.

Hopefully if you are bang on 11 weeks they should be able to get results.

No idea about calling you back. If its NHS I'd not like to say what each NHS Trust policy is. Private they usually clarify your dates with you and advise you of when to book in. I went private and thought I was a few days further along, so we went for a date and all worked out. I think I would have had to pay for another scan if I'd been wrong on my dates and they could not get measurements, but don't quote me on it.

Thanks ladies. Had my scan today and the baby was fine. I am 10+4, they didn't ask me back for another scan. I've also read that the nuchal scan should be from 11 weeks. They didn't seem to concerned though

Anyway, I'm just glad we've seen the baby. I had convinced myself that I was having a phantom pregnancy and that they wouldn't find anything at the scan, and then everyone would think I had made the whole thing up. I've had 3 dreams like this! I think its because I had never had my pregnancy confirmed by my GP, she just took my word for it! Good luck to everyone still waiting for their scans.

xx

Great news, glad everything went OK.

Was it a dating scan or a nuchal scan? Nuchal scans aren't routinely given on the NHS.

Ah right, i've been getting the 2 mixed up. I thought they were the same thing. It was just a dating scan then. Thanks Bagpuss.

congrats on the scan. I had mine on Friday. The hospital i attend offers nuchal scan as a combination test (bloods taken as well) to all women. I spoke to my sister about this last night and she said this is rare as most NHS hospital do not do this. She had to go private for hers. They took a measurement from the babies neck and a blood test. They will then phone me in 3-5 days to let me know if I am in the high risk group. If i dont hear in this time frame I am in the negative group and they will send a letter. Fingers crossed. I am a bit worried due to my age (36).The hospital do this as they can then offer you a CVS. This can be done after the 11th week.

Thanks for this Siany. Love your LFC pic by the way  I opted to get some bloods done at 15 weeks for downes syndrome and spina bifida, but I may still have a private nuchal scan in a couple of weeks.

FWIW if you go private for a Nuchal they usually do the bloods to go with it then also. It gives them their readings for all the things they test for then. The scan alone does not give them enough findings and the blood work up allows them to give more definitive results.

We went private to a Nuffield hospital and the bloods were all part of the Nuchal test. Just allow time to book before the test window is past. I got an appointment in plenty of time but I booked 2 weeks ahead. Usually a few days is enough but check around.

Cost wise it was about £180 for it and we got all the results in a few days. Speicialist scan and so on so it costs a bit I'm afraid.
