Firstly, I am really sorry if there is TMI in here but, Sam has always suffered from constipation or diaorrhea (sp?) but, the last few weeks he has got worse.

He is going every 2 -4 days but when he does manage to go it is like an explosion has gone off. I am forever having to throw away his clothes because it gets everywhere.

He has just 'been' this morning and the last time he did was Thursday last week and that was horrific he was totally blathered in it.

He spends days straining and nothing happens apart from he is really grumpy and irritable.

Is this normal?

Small babies can go every few hours right up to over a week between poos when being BF. And it is runny as a rule. Bowel habits changes as LO's systems mature. If he were constipated he would be pooing little rabbit dropping like hard poos.

My LO used to poo lots of smaller runny poos, about 6 times a day until about 10 days ago. Then he didn't poo for 48 hours and like your LO was grumpy. When he finally had a poo he almost exploded and he pooed a huge amount. Since then he only does one (sometimes 2) poos a day and fusses for about 6 hours before actually doing it. And its always a real nappy filler

He has gotten some clothes stained but I soak them straight away and it usually comes out or fades enough to hardly notice. I don't worry if stains stick around at this age tbh as they soon grow out of the clothes and I can't afford to throw stuff away. Dress your LO in something dark trouser wise when if you think he may poo that day. Stains won't show then once washed.

Have you spoken to your HV about it? She might be able to suggest something. I know its not nice to have to watch them in discomfort. I just try to distract my LO as best I can, sometimes with a bath if he gets really miserable and it seems to help. Otherwise getting legs moving seems to help. Either let him kick and play or else I rotate them. And holding his feet I gently push his legs up and toward his tummy and hold them there for a few seconds and then repeat a few times.

Hopefully he'll settle and it won't be so bad for you both

Which milk are you using hun?

My friend Bexx had this problem with her baby boy and she was using Cow and Gate - it's EXACTLY as you describe. At 6 weeks she changed him onto SMA Gold and now he poos regularly and normally.

Worth a try? Of course you may already be on SMA Gold :rotfl:

Thanks Debecca and Sherlock.

He is on Cow and Gate i think it is about time i changed it again he has been on Aptimal previously but that didn't agree with him either

I'm seeing the HV on wednesday so i'll have a word with her then.

He's like a poo machine today
