Had a very unhappy baby today, she's been awake since 6am, and has only just settled for a sleep now at 2.30pm! In this space of time she's drank 14oz of milk which seems like loads to me (she's 3 weeks old), if I put her down to carry on sleeping she wakes up after 5 minutes and starts constantly crying, so now I'm too scared to put her down! Any ideas? Am I over feeding her?

the first few weeks are the hardest as your baby is settling into her feeding patterns! i would say your only over feeding her if she is being sick after taking the milk if not then she obviously needs it, and feeding on demand in the first few weeks is essential to your baby :)

i had a greedy little boy for the first 7 weeks and then eventually he settled into a 3-4 hourly routine, as for the not wanting to go down she probably feels secure when ur holding her so you could try swaddling to see if that helps

xxxx

Thanks for your reply, I was starting to think nobody knew! Yeah, she keeps it all down, which made me think I'm not over doing it, but thought I'd ask, she did eventually stay asleep, I think she must have tired herself out from crying and fighting sleep so much!
I'm not very good at swaddling, don't think I've got the technique right, should practice that I suppose!

They have a growth spurt at 3 weeks and again at 6 weeks so sounds like that to me, you will prob find you have a few days when she does nothing but sleep!!

Sounds like it is a growth spurt then, the little guzzler!! :):)

Just to be aware that it might be colic related, I mistakenly took the crying in pain for crying for food and my lo drank as much as you'd put in front of her which made everything worse x

We had thought it was colic and were using infacol which didn't help, then the health visitor said it was probably silent reflux, so saw the doc who gave us infant gaviscon which also made no difference, so no just thinking we have to just put up with it until it goes on its own! Currently asleep on my chest as the second I put her down she gets really screechy, not going to get much done again today!!

We have a similar problem, my baby's only 5 days tho... Wakes when we lay her down. Guess he's just going to love fuss and cuddles xx

a sling is a godsend for times like that, if they have reflux or colic they may brink more milk to try and soothe their tummys, try a bath and tummy massage for colic and keep them upright / prop up their cot/basket for the reflux. i used to half swaddle my lo while feeding so the blanket under her was warm and then put her down asleep with the blanket under her head and back still and just cover her with another blanket so she didnt feel the difference of being put down.
