Tongue Tie

My lil Harry was born with a bad tongue tie, it holds the tip of his tongue to the bottom of his mouth so that he is able to poke it out and it bends in like a 'v' shape when he cries. I was told about it as soon as he was born and was told to expect finding bf hard, but that someone would see me about it and decide if anything needed doing about it.

Well after complaining of pain and discomfort and problems with his latching on at the hospital, they discharged us without a referral to have it looked at. I brought it up at out day 3, day 5, day 9 and day 10 checks at home. But because he has gained weight they weren't interested in helping us.

Well finally on day 10 (yesterday) my midwife listened to me when I said feeding takes ages, he is always feeding, it hurts me and it is giving him really bad wind because he can't make a proper seal, she phoned up our hospitals lactation specialist.

I got the phone call tidy from the hospital and told her our bf problems and she asked if I had heard of tongue tie, to which I said we already knew he had one. She was shocked that no one had referred us to her until day 11, with it being such an obvious tongue tie and that she was on duty the time I was in hospital so could have seen me then and referred us straightaway.

So hopefully we should have an appointment this week or next depending on the waiting list. Can't wait to actually be able to feed my lil man properly and not have to think about giving it up.

Bit of a pointless rambling post, but it has made me so happy we are actually getting somewhere with it finally :) xx

Glad you've got it sorted Kanga  you're doing a fabulous job feeding him by the sounds of it :)

I'm going to go read your birth story. Been meaning to and you just reminded me. Hope you're doing ok xxxxx

You should complain to PALS or they'll never learn from their mistakes. Glad to hear you're still persevering in spite of this good on you it cant be easy

So after a long long wait i have finally got an appointment through for Harry to have his tongue tie cut this thursday, only 4 weeks after being referred!! It is ridiculous as I can see why people give up breastfeeding with the lack of support from the nhs. I am so glad I managed to persevere with it even though I give him EBM once a day to give my nips a rest. xx

I'm so proud of you, you are a total inspiration! So many would've quit and you've carried on! You deserve a million medals and lots of pats on the back!

Well done you :D

aww hun thank u, just knowing it's best for Harry to have my milk keeps me going. I just think one feed at a time, and time just passes by so quickly xx

Oh my god, that's terrible patient care! Causing you stress discomfort for 11 days, with no good reason!!

WHAT A BUNCH OF CHIMPS!!!!!
nice to see the specialist was so nice though!

Harry has just had his tongue tie cut. They took him out the room to do it and then brought him back round after so I could feed him. He was only crying cos he was hungry as he was doing this before they took him. I could tell feeding was better, but because my nips are still sore and he has to learn how to latch on differently, it was a bit painful still. Just got to hope it improves over the next couple of days xx

Yeeey! I am sure you will see some improvement very fast.
I saw yesterday at the pharmacy cool pads that they stick around your nipple in between feelings. One of those lasts for 24 h it says.
Apparently they do miracles with nipples , healing them so fast, but they are quite pricey...
Maybe it worths a try though if you are in too much pain?

So sorry Kanga I missed this completely but well done you on carrying what must have been a really hard few weeks! Its amazing that you managed to carry on breastfeeding and so glad Harry is now sorted out at long last! xx

YYYYAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!

Bfing without TT is painful at first but it'll pass quickly!!!

Congrats for lasting so long!
