Little zach has a bit of tongue tie and he does struggle with his latch most of the time . He is exclusively bf, lost 200g at his day 6 weigh, was weighed yesterday (day9) and only gained 20 g - they said he should be back to his birth weight by day 10 which he clearly isn't.

Anyone have any experience or advice? Thinking of getting it done privately as nhs waiting list is 12 weeks!!

I've no experience, but have heard others on here having it done.

I was told DD1 was tt and to pay them £100 ASAP to do it. It was just a money spinner, no tie. But, I your LO stuggles with latch of prob say do it.

My bro was tt and waited til about age 8 to snip. Husband is too and he hates it!

Hi hun

My little baby had a tongue tie that was getting in the way, he lost significant weight too. The op at 2 weeks made a massive difference to his latch and since then BF became easier and he has been gaining weight normally. Plus less painful for me!

I'd recommend getting it done if it's getting in the way, I think I remember them saying that after 3 months you need anaesthetic for the operation, whereas it was over quickly for a young baby. Xx

I don't have personal experience of tongue tie, but I'd say if you can afford to get it done privately, then do it. I know a couple of people that have done this, and gone on to successfully bf babies, with good weight gains.

Xx

Alfie was born with tt, although not bf. we had his cut at 6 days old through our gp, we nearly ended up having to pay but one of the local GPS were able to do it. We were told it can affect speech when they get older, and in bf babies their latch. It can break as they get older, but we thought it was easier just to get it done now. Alfie had a cold at the time so he was miserable for a few days after and did get a small ulcer but it has healed really well and is over and done with in seconds.

Thanks ladies, I've made an appointment for tomorrow night. Going to bf specialist tomorrow morning to get her opinion as well. Going to do some expressing tonight to give myself a rest. X

12 weeks wait for a tongue tie snip!! That's ridiculous! Can't your midwife book you in directly with the hospital? The NHS is supposed to be encouraging breastfeeding so it's daft that they can't help you with such a quick and easy procedure (it literally takes seconds!) at the time you need it.

Our lo had tongue tie, it was a severe tongue tie and couldn't latch at all. We were told 7 week waiting list nhs. We had it done privately when he was 6 days old. Like Toni c said it can cause speech ossues in the future so we decided it was best to get done asap. He only cried for a second and healed really quick.

My son has a tongue tie but we weren't able to have it done on the NHS because I wasn't breastfeeding. I was so mad at the time as I'd read loads that suggested reflux (which he had) could be made worse by tongue tie. Anyhow, he still has it and it seems slightly better than it was (never severe anyway), he doesn't speak much yet so difficult to know the long term effects of not having it done. Several GPs put me off by suggesting the risks could sometimes outweigh the benefits. I'd say if you're having problems then it would be best to get it sorted. Can't believe there's such a wait though! Crazy - when they're that age 12 weeks is a hell of a long time!

Got it done, difference noticed already, goes on so much faster and doesn't fall off, also much less painful for me...now to let my nipples heal and we should be flying! X

Glad to hear it was a success! Hope it's plain sailing for you from now on... I expect you'll continue to notice a big difference! :)

I'd be tempted to make some sort of complaint to the nhs abouy
t it. A 12 week wait, when they're meant to be encouraging breastfeeding is ridiculous. I don't think many women would be able to keep up expressing in that time.

Glad it went well though. Happy boobing! :)
