Hi all,

I've tried one bolognese sauce from scratch recipe (me and DH usually use dolmio, but to make for Asher aswell got to have no salt).

Asher didn't really like it, and to be honest I don't blame him, it was pretty tasteless!

Please can someone help! What is the secret to making a tasty homemade bolognese sauce??

There must be a magic ingredient that I'm missing!

What did you put in it?

I usualy have:

Onions
Mince
Peppers
Mushrooms
Tin of Tomatos

I know some people put carrots in too but I don't like them in bolognaise.
Also how long did you simmer the sauce for? Personally I think a min of 30 mins simmering.

I'm sure others will have fantastic recipes as I'm an ok cook but not very inspired!

Garlic. Fresh or granuals. The more garlicy something is then the more likely they are to eat (thats my two I mean).

Argh double post instead of edit

I had,

passata (sieved tomatoes)
garlic
courgette
onion
small amount of apple juice

can't remember what else there was, think that was about it except for the mince. It just tasted so bland compared to what I usually cook.

I used to use a beef oxo cube, dolmio sauce, tomato ketchup, onions and mince. It was so tasty, this new one in comparison is awful!

Was just hoping there was something else I could try to make it taste special.

hmmmm! Could work!

Is it ok for young babies? Isn't high in salt or anything is it?

I use

Extra virgin olive oil for frying

Clove garlic (or 2) Leave out if cooking for baby if you wish
Chopped onion
Chopped fresh parsley (leave out if cooking for baby perhaps? )
Dried basil (tablespoon of)
Dried oregano (tablespoon of)

Fry this gently all together till onions start to turn brown

Then add

Lean mince

Fry off till brown

If cheating and making it quick then passata and tinned toms. If not then this is where I chop and cook down a heap of fresh tomatos before removing skins and putting through the blender. e

Then add

Tube of tomato puree (of half depending on how much flavour you like)
Tablespoon of paprika powder

Simmer gently for an hour

Can also make a Northern Italian recipe using ground beef, grated carrot and swede. Only really in winter when swede is in season.

Oooh I've got a recipe for a brilliant one by Jools Oliver - do you want me to write it out here for you KJ? Its in her Minus Nine to One book.

For my homemade sauce I add these herbs:

Bay leaves
garlic
mixed herbs
