I've been sent a letter to attend an appointment at my local hospital on March 31. To allow at least two hours for the visit and to bring my notes and any meds etc with me.

I called the hospital and asked what it was all about, and was told it was just an outpatients appointment and all PG women were offered them.

She was unable to tell me what went on during the visit as she was the receptionist and therefore not in the know. No one else was available to talk to at the time :|

Anyone able to tell me what the appointment is all about? This is not the main hospital where I have had my scans etc, nor where if I need to go to hospital during labour I'll be sent (planning a homebirth if all goes well anyways), it has no childbirth facilities like that.

I am due a scan at 34 weeks at the main hospital and hope to get the maternity unit tour there also incase I need to go there to birth, so don't really get what this appointment of two hours plus is all about.

Any light you can shed would be appreciated. If need be then I can get hubby to come along with me.

Thanks :)

i had one, and spoke to consultant about birthing and stuff and pain relief. and spoke about the scan. not sure why they say allow 2 hours? maye they always running late there?

In birmingham we dont get anything like that but sure in some areas thats the norm.. I would speak to your community midwife she should be able to fill u in. U would think they would provide u with more details though.

Aha one of those. Joys of drugs and all that  Hmm not sure its going to tell me much I don't already know but I'll make the most of it and grill the consultant about a few things. I don't really feel its going to help my concerns on intervention and so on. What one consultant says here might be different to what another will say at the main hospital  I'm really one of those hands off and leave me alone types  Hopefully the consultant is based out of the main hospital and covers outlying areas, so will know Taunton and its workings well.

And yeah, 2 hours seemed excessive. But hell if they are allowing that much I am sure I can make the most of it

I saw her last week and she didn't say anything about this sort of thing being offered. She is seeing me again at 31 weeks and booking my 34 week scan etc elsewhere.

Oddness, but hey, decent NHS service is not something I am going to complain about too much  I'm happy to be getting the care and will use the time allocated as best I can :)

sounds routine, here they don't offer them - you have to be referred by a midwife

what nhs do u come under? im under somerset.

I am also, even before we moved back from Devon, I'd opted for Musgrove for my ante-natal and labour. When we moved back into Somerset and I got a new MW, I was able to opt for a homebirth but remain registered with Musgrove incase.

We don't get anything like that here. Just routine MW appointments...

I figured it was regional. I've had good care so far from Somerset and my local MW etc, so won't complain. Just wasn't expecting this appointment at all, but won't say no to it. Big check up, chat and whatever else.

We get it down here in Cornwall i was due to have one with Oliver at 37weeks but didnt make it that far into my pregnancy!!!
