Just looking for some advice! I am due a membrane sweep and I am a bit worried as it is my first pregnancy! Like does it hurt and would you all recommend one?

i didnt find it that bad. not as uncomfortable as a smear.

Hi adayinmyshoes, a few of us in the January2018 group are in the boat as you at the moment. I was only asking this question the other day.... I've been told its a bit like a smear! Think it's 50/50 whether it works or not! Have a look in the January group too :-)

hmm.....i dont know. i was allowed to have one at 39 weeks as i was struggling in the pregnancy. my cervix wasnt particularly favourable at that point. i had another one a couple of days later, and possibly a 3rd i cant remember but i went into labour on my due date so a week after i started having the sweeps. but its hard to say if that would have happened anyway........

Its just uncomfortable. I went into labour 12 hours later

I felt a little pain but mainly just discomfort. I went into Labour the next day but in honesty I was 9 days over anyway so I don't think the sweep helped

It’s not pleasant and quite uncomfortable but shouldn’t be especially painful. It does all depend on how thorough your MW is though!

I’m having one tomorrow. I’ll tell you afterwards

I think it depends how favourable your cervix is at the point of the sweep. They tried to give me one on my due date and it was very painful, but a few days later didn’t hurt at all!
Hope it goes ok for you, fingers crossed

They couldn’t do one for me yesterday :( the head wasn’t engaged and she said it would risk a cord prolapse if she broke the waters.

I had one with my little girl (now 7) and alltho i was 9 days over did help as i had her day after,

This time (due 26/1) midwife said unless heads engaged they wont do it and generally doesnt do much before your due date, it wasnt that bad from what I remember, slightly uncomfortable but thats it

I had 3, first two with my own midwife which didn’t hurt and third one with a different midwife and that one hurt but my cervix was closed for all of them, but I had a bloody show after the last one and went into labour a day or so after. I really didn’t want any but they really aren’t that bad.
