Hey ladies,

My first baby is due in Nov and I'd like to give breastfeeding a go (although it seems so confusing) however I definitely want to express and introduce a bottle sooner rather than later (I want to give bottles if out and about as just dont feel comfortable - I know its natural just not for me personally)

So my friend has a Medela swing pump shes given me and I mailed Medela asking what parts I should get (tubing, valves, shields etc) and they said we shouldnt share pumps due to cross contamination. I mentioned that hospitals would have shared pumps and hired ones but she said its hospital grade. Do you think its a bad idea to use my friends pump if I buy new parts and sterilse?

Thanks in advance

I have a second hand swing pump. I got a replacement valve tubing bottles breast shield etc from eBay

I used a second hand one from a friend. I got a new shield and tubing etc, and new bottles. Go for it- no bodily fluids go anywhere near the motor, so I can't see hoe there can be a problem. :)

She's bs-ing you with the idea that you would spend £100 on a new one.

I had a pump from a friend, no problems. Just replace the hard to clean bits x

The medula is a closed system, so as long as you clean it properly there is no need to replace bits.

Actually it IS possible for milk to go through the motor bit, it's unlikely so the cross contamination risk is low, and you can pull water through to clean it - but it won't be sterile.

As long as you replace the other bits it should be fine.

Thanks ladies will order the spare parts and clean the unit x
