i had to do the cat litter this morning, it really needed doing and DF hadnt had time. our cat is a housecat anyway, and i wore rubber gloves, and still washed my hands thoroughly afterwards. do u think its ok to do this just occasionally? it cant be that bad if ur careful can it i mean what are single mum-to-be cat owners supposed to do?

As long as your carefull you will be fine, i had cats when i was pregnant with my other 4 children (11 cats when pregnant with my second, cause one had kittens), i always wore gloves to change the litter & washed my hands afterwards i had no problems. I dont have cats anymore but i keep 19 snakes and the same rules apply when cleaning out and feeding due to them possibly carrying salmonella.

I've had the same worries. I always wear gloves, I use the bag tray liners so it's just a quick job of lifting out the litter rather than raking through it to clean it. It's a little more wasteful but it's quicker and cleaner. I also use the Dettol anti bacterial handwash.

Ours is a house cat too which greatly reduces the risk, but they can still be carriers. From what I've read (by spamming google) the biggest risk is the first time you are exposed to toxomoplosis, so if yours hasn't had it then it's not likely she'll/he'll pick up it now.

Yeah ideally we should keep away just in case, but it's not always possible.

Oh and congratumalations Trixipaws xxx

According to mention somewhere in NHS bumpf, it's not a don't do it at all costs, just make sure you're careful and wash hands thoroughly etc. As sarafet says, you'd have to ingest it, so it's just making sure you get rid of all traces from your hands/whatever before touching food/licking fingers etc.

Yep... just don't rub poo in your eye. That's my official tip.

I have tortoises which have the same toxoplamosis (spelling is bad!) risk, make sure you wash your hands after etc. Gloves is better.

okay now you've made me rofl! Luckily our cat now does it outside, don't think I could handle the wee smell certainly!
