Wasn't sure where to put this as it's a recommend for pregnant women whatever trimester you are in or if you are thinking about having a baby its a good read aswell...
Ina May Gaskin - Spiritual Midwifery.
I was recommended this by a friend who is training to be a Doula and also another friend who recently had her fourth baby. Ina May and her husband were part of a travelling group of hippies back at the end of the 1960's who travelled all over the USA starting out from San Francisco and settling eventually in Tennessee. Ina May and her fellow sisters on the road had to learn very quickly how to practice midwifery on each other.. at the time, midwifery was pretty much unheard of and birthing was all done under doctors orders. The fourth edition of this book contains many moving birthing stories of women giving birth entirely naturally under all sorts of circumstances.
I had a really horrible hospital experience with my first and reading this book has helped me to come to terms with what happened to me and has made me feel encouraged and empowered that birth can be totally different. This is such a beautiful book with some really lovely idea's for birthing itself and some different ways of looking at the typical terminology.. like for instance most of the women refer to a contraction as a rush ... I think thats brilliant.. contraction makes you think "tense" and rush makes you think "flow" and all of us need to be thinking flow and let go when we have our babies...
I'd particularly recommed for any mum's who have had a harrowing birthing experience with previous pregnancies and who are pregnant again - reading the book will help you see that actually Women are amazing and we CAN do it on our own without very much help other than wise intuitive women and the love of our family around us.
