...or more accurately, forbidden meats and other products.

How seriously is everyone taking the 'thou shalt not eat... brie, pate, soft boiled eggs.. etc.?

I've slipped up a couple of times on soft boiled eggs but I've cooked them so they are pretty firm, just runny enough to dip soldiers in. And it's the only way I can stomach eggs at the moment (I normally love them).

But the worst part is I'm not allowed a bloody steak! (I'm not being profane, I just like my steak REALLY rare and bleeding). Seeing as I normally eat this quite a lot surely my system's used to dealing with any bacteria there's likely to be in it? And I'm fairly sure our parents' generation (or mine, anyhow, I'm 32) weren't given as many dietary restrictions?

Hi Gnomentum

Hope you don't mind me 'trespassing' on 2nd Trimester!!!!

There is an interesting article on the below website which gives reasons for avoiding certain foods but also gives some statistics to put it into perspective.

http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=113699

Also one on eggs (though this one doesn't really cater for pregnancy just explains a bit about salmonella - http://www.mercola.com/2002/nov/13/eggs.htm

I am fairly good about everything except for peanuts - I can't seem to give up snickers bars or crunchy nut cornflakes... mmmmm.....!!

I think re. the other advice - it's down to individual choice - there is SOOOO much information out there that sometimes I don't know where to start - and there is always new research being released to confuse and contradict!! I'm sure that the risk of my baby having spina bifida is extremely small, but I take folic acid because it's been proven to reduce the chance even further. I generally take the same approach with other things, but as I say, I can't quite give up the peanuts!!!

Good luck!!

Cheers for the links! It's nice to see they regard some of my pet faves as far lower risk than some of the stuff I eat less in any case. I wish the books prioritised the percieved risks in this way...

And for what it's worth I'm suspicious about the peanut thing anyway, it's not long since they were attributing peanut allergies to the oils put in certain exzema medication that was introduced for babies.. as the incidence of peanut allergies boomed shortly after the introduction of this stuff after being relatively unheard of through the donkeys years our mums were eating peanuts, I put more credence inthe earlier theory!

As for you trespassing, well, technically I shouldn't be here in 2nd myself until Thursday!

i craved egg and soldiers when i was in first tri and i could only eat what i craved without been sick so i had loads!! i dont take so much to not eating stuff because it *might* give me food poisoning but i do avoid the foods that they say to avoid because they have too much of something in....

I have to admit that I have eaten poached eggs that may have been a little runny but I made sure the eggs were fresh - and I have craved a rare steak so had one........ but I have not eaten stilton, pate or brie Also, now I am in 3rd tri ( Sorry for tresspassing too!) I am allowing myself a glass of wine a week... I keep thinking that women managed years ago and were encouraged to eat things like liver to increase their iron levels and vit a.... now its taboo.... in a few years they will tell us something else is bad...

My friend has told me that you are not supposed to apply anything that is perfumed to your skin as the chemicals will affect the baby!!! If I did that and avoided everything I would be very smelly!!!

well, it does imply that rare steak is a lot less risky than soft cheeses and pate!

tbh this is my 3rd pregnancy, ive eaten soft boiled eggs, brie, blue stilton and practically alive steak!!! i dont eat any of them very often but i was fine, though if i get food poisoning i know why :x
