Electric breast pump advice

I am planning on breastfeeding too but have just decided to see how things go and aim to get through the first few weeks before investing in a pump. I've got that exact one (the medela) in my amazon shopping basket so I can order and have it in a few days if needed (can always get a cheap emergency manual if I'm desperate) xx

I had the tommee tippee one, it is awful! Stay away from that! I have the medela swing and it is fab!

We had to get one at midnight on the first night out of hospital and my daughter wouldn't latch and was screaming the house down.

Shall I wait and see how I get on then before buying one? Trying to be organised but also on a budget so really don't want to waste money. xx

I just went and bought the TT manual pump for £14.99 - thanks for the tip x

A friend of mine had the TT electric one and wouldn't recommend it... Loads of positive reviews for Medela pumps. I figured manual will do just fine!

I have a Phillips one as it was in a big set for half price. I'm keen to pump soon as is ok to so I can have a drink. Shameful but true. Ha ha

when I breastfed I found that the smaller pumps can only cope with sporadic use, which was fine for planning a night out in advance etc, but the motors tend to be a bit crap. However, when I went back to work I invested in a Medela Freestyle (second hand) as they are hospital grade. It's not worth trying anything other than hospital grade double pumps if you're pumping anything near regularly.

To be honest, if you're just feeding normally and not planning to use bottles, I wouldn't bother! You shouldn't need to pump unless you're going to be away from baby.

Oh, and don't entertain a manual pump - that is HARD work lol

I'm on hand for any advice if you wanted to ask about feeding (and when and how to drink - it's important to know!). My MW is trying to get me to train as a peer supporter so she must trust me to know a thing or two ;)

I bought medala swing
Id rather just solely express but mw advised bf til 4-6 weeks as babys suck is better and supply will be better as a result

Expressing is much harder than feeding too! I hate pumping with a passion; it's not pleasant

I really wanna do it to give hubby father son time and allow me to go out really x

Yep it is great for some freedom once your supply is established and baby's latch is good. I was advised to introduce bottles by 4 months if I planned to use them on occasions. If you leave it too late, the baby won't take one at all. But don't pump before 6 weeks as it'll mess up your supply and bottles confuse baby's latch. It's all highly technical lol

Thanks girls and thank you MrsMeany, I am a first time mum, really want to try and breast feed but literally don't have a clue what I am doing!! I would prefer to exclusively breastfeed but also wondering about my OH bonding and being able to give a bottle once a day maybe? I am thinking of going for the medela electric one, would the mini one be ok? How many times a day do babies tend to feed? xx

I have a lansinoh electric pump this time. This is the third baby I've breastfed, I've had to start expressing already because my boobs are just to full. I've tried waking him to feed from me but he won't take it. I can get about 40ml of each boob for now.

Last time I had a Tommee Tippee electric pump, it was ok for me. Xx

I used to let my husband do bath time. That was his time with baby as I was doing all the feeds. It worked well and he never felt he was missing out. My mum on the other hand used to complain loads haha

I disagree with not pumping before 6 weeks - I have to pump off around an oz per boob every couple of feeds as I have oversupply and can't latch him without removing the excess. This isn't gonna be the case for most women but I have found not pumping is agony. Obviously pumping causes me to make more milk but I am balancing it by pumping the least amount I can. Not to poo poo MrsM's great advice but rather I don't think oversupply issues are highlighted enough, the general advice never applies quite the same in my experience.

I have the same problem Kumber that's why I'm already pumping to xx

I've pumped from day 4 on the advice of the mw and Dr. This was to up supply. Obviously every child is different but all 3 of mine moved between bottle and breast with no issues. X

Lisa hope this isn't too late but was skipping tri's and came across this. Don't buy the mini one if you plan on regularly pumping. I bought it with dd1 and it lasted 2 weeks pumping 6 times a day! Their excuse was it was meant as an occasional pump, wouldn't agree with me when I said even so but it should last longer still. The Motors aren't made well. After heavily researching I bough the lansinoh double pump which was great and lasted me the whole time. Also heard great reviews on the normal medela ones but had already been put off with their customer care (luckily mothercare were more sympathetic and swapped for the lansinoh!)
