Were looking at the Dominican Republic for our honeymoon as doesnt seem particularly expensive, anyone been and can give us any info of what its like?

:)

I went when I was 10 weeks pregnant. All I will say is I think it can be hit and miss depending on your hotel. Some people I have spoken to have had amazing times but we didn't enjoy it.... we stayed at the Bahai Principe - Don't bother booking if this is where you are looking... it was awful Location was amazing (tropical beach and really hot) but the food was awful undercooked etc and they had a prob with rats.

One place I would reccomend though is Cuba... just as cheap but v v nice! We stayed on the Cayos Coco's Islands and it was amazing.

PM me if you would like more details.

I went about 6/7 years ago and stayed at the Iberostar Dominicana in Punta Cana.
The actual resort was very nice and there was plenty to do, the only thing I found was that there wasnt much to do off the complex as it was quite a long way from anywhere. Also found that if didnt grab a sunbed ealy in morning then you were out of luck, there werent enough to go round either by the pool or on beach but that may have changed.
There also wasnt that much on offer with the tour company in way off trips and after talking to some Americans they had been whale watching and all sorts.
saying that I think it was the side of the island we were on as friends stayed on other side of island and had much better experience and more variety of days out etc, white river rafting etc.
Personally I preferred Mexico and stayed in Playa Del Carmen and that was beautiful!!!

I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time where ever you end up!!!

Choose your hotel carefully as others said the hotel is pretty much what you'll be doing (their meals, their entertainment, their pools, spas, gym etc) as outside the resorts there really isn't much to be getting on with, seeing, doing, visiting etc. I was there in 2001 so might have changed somewhat now but judging on what others are saying I somehow doubt that it's changed that much.

iv not been myself but DF's parents went last June and they loved it, they want to go again, they said it was paradise and the best place in the world, and by the photos they took i would have to agree - looked gorgeous!!!! :D

Oh yes, scenery wise etc it was gorgeous, nice waters etc, lovely local's I think it boils down to the hotel/area. St. Lucia is exactly the same. A beautiful island but kinda boring if your hotel isn't up to much in the entertainment department as there isn't a lot to see or do there.

couldnt fault the scenery, the beach etc and the hotel I stayed in had everything from restaurants, bars, nightclubs, casino and spa. you could walk along beach to next hotel complex which wasnt all-inclusive and use their casino etc as well, but it can get a little boring seeing the same things day in and day out. also apart from the 'speciality' restaurants the food was very repetitive, it was nice though. when stayed in Mexico we were near enough the nearest local town to go there for the day/evening and it was so cheap you didnt mind paying for a meal etc. I would definatly go back to mexico but wouldnt stay in Cancun, too commercial

Pick which area you want to go to with caution. I would steer clear of Puerto Plata (Playa Dorada) Cabarete isn't too bad, the other side of the island, Punta Cana is much nicer.
Be careful in the sea tho. I stood on a sea urchin & couldn't work home (air hostess!) shame eh! but flipping painful getting them pulled out at the minor injuries unit :rotfl:

I prefer Mexico to Dom Rep. but if you want to go to the caribbean Barbados, Antigua, St. Lucia, Greneda etc are all nice. Cuba (The Cayo's) are really nice too. I hated Havana tho. a complete dump.

Yeah it was Peurto Plata that I went to andI had an awful holiday. But have been to the Cayos Islands and they were beautiful

If you are the type of person that likes to do things onholiday and likes shopping then I would reccomend Mexico (Cancun) It is very commercialised but you can get out of it by either staying at your hotel or going out on excursions. But then you have the added benefit of being able to go shopping or nightclubbing if you want to.

I stayed in the hotel that has been on watchdog for being full of swingers  (Blue Bay Getaway) and this was for my honeymoon... have to say I didn't see anything though and I was sure that watchdog had made it all up! lol

OO I am in the mood for getting away now! lol
