I definately know it's time for Jack to start solids, he's waking now in the night for a feed.
He's slept right through since about 10 weeks and he is draining his bottles.

I have been giving him bits of baby rice at tea time, but i think i will have to give him an extra meal now.

The HV asked me other day if he had started waking in the night and nowi know why!! (thought it was an odd question when she asked!!)

Did anyone else experience this beofre starting set meal times?

ruben has already started doing this.... he's only 13 1/2 weeks old, but a massive15lbs 14oz. (he was quite big at birth too, and was a week late)

he used to sleep from 11pm until 4 or 5 am, and slept through occasionally. the last 2 weeks he has been waking at 2am and 5am without fail, and also wants food every 2 hours during the day. last weekend when OH gave him a bottle as i was out with a friend, he drained over 9oz and wanted more (OH eventually managed to get him to sleep)!!! he woke up 2 hours later hungry again!

thought it was just a normal growth spurt at first but this is more than that...

i have 2 different HVs, one says that due to his weight, how hungry he is and the interest he's showing in our food he's prob OK to start on some baby rice, the other is a very strict "no solids before 6 months" person. i know which one i agree with more... if he carries on like this i will try him on a tiny bit of baby rice in a weeks time. (i feel like he's constantly on the boob now...)

Frankie's starting to be a little like this now she is always constantly hungry during the day and will too feed every 2-3hrs she drains all her bottles aswell and sometimes about an hour later she is hungry again and sometimes will have a tendency to wake during the night rather than sleep through like she has been so on and off for about a week now she has been having a little baby rice and loves it :D i couldnt really give a sod what the h/v says as each baby is different my little boy started on baby rice etc at 13wks and he was fine with it and now he's a happy healthy 2 year old! (well almost 2)!!!! :D

Yes the same thing happened with ella, she woke in the night after sleeping trough since 4 weeks! Also like Ruben she was feeding every 2-2 and a half hours and draining her bottles. now she has

bottle and baby cereal for breckie
bottle and babyrice for lunch
bottle and veggies for tea
bottle before bed

after giving her baby rice for a while she started refusing her bottle and pushing it away becuase she prefers solids, so thats when I intrduced more than just the baby rice

As i have said i having been giving frankie little tasters of baby rice for over a week now how long should i give her this for before trying something a little different? :?

The health visitor gave me the all clear on tuesday to start weaning him anyway but she said it would be best to leave him til he starts waking in the night. Well now is definately the time.

Can i ask one thing though that i have been unsure of as frankie was 3wks early will that make any difference as to were she is with developement like feeding etc??? :?

Petchy - just wanted to say that its normal to feed every 2 hours for a breastfed baby - Ella has been like that for a little while. 3 months and 4 months are major growth spurt times - she's just starting to come through it now :) She will also take 12oz of expressed milk at night no probs, has done for weeks. She's always seemed to take a lot from the bottle.

kina, i'm so glad to hear i'm not the only one in this situation!!! sometimes in the middle of the night when i am up feeding and feeling like a zombie it's hard to remember that there are thousands more mums probably up at the same time! lol

I'm guilty of that! Especially at 4.30 this morning when I'm grumbling to DH 'she can't be hungry!!! She used to sleep 12 hours!!!'. And I feel all moody and horrible, go in there and pick her up and she starts to try and eat my face  Then I feel better :D It is getting easier now, I was really starting to wonder if it would, or whether her constant feeding was how it was going to be. But she seems to be through the worst (touch wood!). Guess she's built up my supply a bit more now. She's 20 weeks today and I feel proud that we've got this far without introducing solids. It would have been easy to give in and try them during her growth spurts (especially after I picked up my Bounty pack and there was a jar of some pear and apple stuff in there), but I am glad I waited it out. Hopefully then we will be able to miss the mush stage and start with the finger foods. I've been watching her cues and although she watches us eat and everything goes into her mouth (she's teething) I truly don't believe that she is ready for solids. When she can make the decision to hold, bite, chew and swallow things herself (like brocolli trees) then I think that will be the right time for us :)
