Crafting question...

I am buying some penne pasta and food colouring to dye it for threading on string and collage

I'll be taking it into work but also keeping a bit here at home for the boys.
My question is, how do I dye the pasta? I googled and one site said rubbing alcohol And one site said just put it in a bag and shake it but doesn't it go all splotchy?

Has anyone ever done this, how did you do it?

I did this once with the playgroup i used to help at. I put it in a zip lock bag a shook it all up. Do it a few days before though because it takes ages to dry!
