I asked this at my bank the other day as i found a cheque dated Dec 07.
The lady told me it's 6-12 months depending on the company/bank. I haven't checked to see it it has cleared yet but I'm hoping it has as i can't remember where it came from
I paid for a takeaway (delivery) by cheque before easter, waited for the cheque to go through and it didnt. Phoned them and they said the wrong name was on cheque (the name of shop is not the company name apparantly) so I said I'd replace it when they next delivered. They came out and I gave them another one with the right name on that they told me to write and it still hasn't come out of my account, this was about the start of May
I recently paid a 10 month old cheque into my account and they didnt even look at the date (and I didnt tell them how old it was).........I did read they sometimes refuse them but its upto each individual bank - apparently legally a cheque can be valid for 2 years+
