What is a suitable cage size? We picked up our new car last week, and when the bloke invited us in to sort out the payment / documents, he had two budgies in a cage about the same size as our hamster cage. Surely that's wrong? I'm not a bird fan, but it's keeping me awake now thinking that I should have done something. Also, under the cage it was about an inch thick in feathers and mess, lord knows what the bottom of the cage was like - I daren't look. How long would it take for them to create that much mess? His house stank, the car stank (it's full of air fresheners now even after cleaning it twice) erghhhhhhh gross man!!!!!!

That's horrible, I can't stand to see animals going through cruelty, will you be seeing the people again?
The general rule as far as I know is bigger is better, and they're supposed to have enough room to fly around. The guidelines are:
20"x12"x18" for 1 Bird
40"x20"x32" for a Pair.
If it is a small cage, which I guess some people can't help, as long as they make up for it with exercise time.. then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But having them live in such a mess is terrible, those poor birds. Theres only so much you can do to educate people though.. the rest is upto themselves.

Cage was about 18" x 12" x 18" high - so waaaaay to small for two. He told me he let them out 'every so often'. I won't be seeing him ever again thank goodness :x , but I keep having nightmares about the poor birdies - if I'm ever in that situation again, I'd have to say something, but I wasn't sure whther it was an ok size. He got pretty embarassed when Charlotte was talking to them and asking them if they had enough room (from the mouths of babes and all that) so he might have taken the hint. I'll never know :(

Budge is definitley in the know of Budgies!

It all depends on the species.

BUT they should be able to strech and flap there wings without hitting bars of the cage, other perches and toys. Even if they DO get out time!

They shouldn't stink period - even if not been cleaned out in a while.

My Berty smells and she's seriously ill, what I can smell is the bacteria so those birds are probably ill.

It's moulting time but even my indoor aviry of 8 birds dosen't have that many feathers etc on bottom and they get cleaned out every 2 weeks when not breeding and every 6 when breeding (can't clean em out when sitting on eggs or young chicks or they'll get abandond) Even then they don't get that bad and I feel guilty!

I had a parrot cage for one budgie because I felt bad about one not having enough room.

Budgies dont smell full stop. They need to be cleaned out regularly too, I used to clean mine out 2x a week minimum. Budgie poo has no odor, the only thing you can smell is a mix between very very very light amonia(from the urine) and seed hulls have a slight nutty straw odor. Dont feel bad babe, hopefully he will get them a bigger cage if he got the hint. Dont think about it anymore xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

you have to be really careful though that the bar spacings are not so big that the budgie can get their heads stuck :(

Hi

Its terrible when animals are mistreated, people usually dotn care much about the smaller helpless ones :( So nice of you to be worried about them though, hopefully he got the hint
