To phone and broadband companies, getting you to stay is worth 3 new customers, its a HUGE part of their business model getting existing customers to stay with them after their contract period. Go on their website and fine out the 'new customer' deal you like. OR just decide you'd like half price line rental, or maybe just agree with your OH that you dont want to spend more than X per month on your tv phone and broadband.
Ring them up and press the option for "if youre thinking of leaving us" DO NOT speak to any other operator, you have to get through to the disconnection dept. These people have a target to keep to, a certain percentage of their calls they have to convince stay. They are given more freedom to give better offers than the regular operators. Start the call by asking if you leave will you incur any fines. They'll ask you why you want to leave, explain youre trying to reduce your outgoings and you've seen a certain special offer with another company. They'll ask if youre a happy customer and if theres anything they can do to convince you to stay, say that you've been very happy and if it werent for the price you really wouldnt be considering leaving at all, you'll be put on hold (so that he can get authorisation from his manager to offer a certain deal) then he'll come back and offer you a deal equivalent to the deal you described or worse than it. Dont be pulled in, say that no thats no better than the deal youve seen, (always say no to the first offer) then you'll go on hold again, he'll come back and offer a better deal, say "ummmmm... as if youre thinking about it" ask him to explain again, make any observations like "free minutes dont really appeal as we dont use the phone too much" once you've got a great deal, ask if they can credit your account (you think youve seen a cashback deal for new customers for the other company!) you'll get it, by this stage you've been on hold twice, he's invested a lot of time, he NEEDS you to stay.
Feels really cheeky, be very hesitant, play dumb, be prepared to say why you dont like a certain offer, but be polite about it. Im a pro, I pay £21 for my mobile with unlimited texts, internet and 900 anytime minutes, and I pay £15 for my talktalk phone and broadband package. and I got £20 credit on both accounts when I renewed them. I havent done it myself but Im told it works for gas/electric companies.
good luck!
